HOMEWORK: Review the documents I emailed to you. We will talk about PREWRITING and WRITING tomorrow.

I am teaching the most basic kind of essay. This is like following a recipe. When you get comfortable writing essay after 3-4 tries, then you can follow your own style.

The style that I am teaching is very basic and clear. It is simple and ‘easy’ to do. You can get fancier with your essays later.

There are lots of different kinds of essays.

I think about writing like cooking. A beginner writer has to follow a recipe very closely. When you get some experience cooking, you don’t need the recipe book anymore.

Plan first!

Then write.

1.PREWRITING – planning your essay, making a little plan to organize what you want to say in each paragraph in your essay

2.WRITING- actually writing the sentences and paragraphs

Example Paragraph

There are 10 wonderful provinces and three territories that you can choose to live in in Canada. I moved to BC because of everything that this province has to offer. First of all, there were work opportunities for me here, much more than in my home province. Add AAA Secondly, I love being around nature, and BC has lots of forest, ocean, and mountains to enjoy. Add BBB Finally, I like the multicultural, multi-ethnic makeup of the province, such as restaurants, festivals, and stores. Add CCC In essence, BC is my chosen home because it offers so much.

Essay – five paragraphs, expand the paragraph to five paragraphs

There are 10 wonderful provinces and three territories that you can choose to live in in Canada. Each has its own attractions. You could make a great life in any of them. However, in my opinion, BC is special and stands out from the rest of them. I moved to BC because of everything that this province has to offer. Namely, BC has many job opportunities, access to wonderful nature, and rich multicultural experiences.

First of all, there were work opportunities for me here, much more than in my home province. I wanted to go to grad school, and UBC offered me work as a teaching assistant. After I graduated, I was able to find work as a teacher quite easily. In my home province, there were very few opportunities for good jobs. Blah blah blah

Secondly, I love being around nature, and BC has lots of lots of forest, ocean, and mountains to enjoy. You can go hiking in the Northshore Mountains. There are lots of parks to go camping. Also, blah blah blah

Finally, I like the multicultural, multi-ethnic makeup of the province, such as restaurants, festivals, and stores. When you walk down the street, you hear a dozen languages being spoken. blah blah blah

In essence, BC is my chosen home because it offers so much. BC has a lot of chances to get good meaningful employment. Also, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth in terms of nature. Finally, BC has a rich tapestry of ethnicities, languages, and cultures. BC is the place for me.

An essay gives you some room to breathe. Make sure you have a plan before you begin to write.
