EF6 8am June 8

 Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Cameras on. Mics muted.

Today’s agenda:

1. Continue with examples of run-on sentences and comma splices DONE

2. Reading strategies

3. “Roses Sing on New Snow”

4. Sentence combining IF TIME

You may find that class attendance is dropping. This happens every term. After midterm recommendations, some students decide to quit rather than finish the class. I don’t understand why.

We have three weeks left with plenty of opportunity to learn and improve.

I don’t like to see people quit. I think quitting is the wrong move. I think you should stay with the class and keep working and improving.

I am very happy to see that you are continuing. I want you to take these next three weeks as an opportunity to push yourself, to strive to learn new written and spoken structures.

Homework sentences in Chat:

1. We had a good lunch on the patio, then we enjoyed a lovely stroll along the beach. RO FIX

I’ll never be able to buy a house, for prices these days are just ridiculous. ‘for’ is unusual

3. I would like togo to visit my family in this semmar because  I miss Tham a lot. RW

4. There are many reasons to visit Greece because the beaches are beautiful and the people are friendly.

I expect your writing to be free of run-on sentences.

Reading Strategies

Some people find reading for school to be challenging. They may not read much in their personal life. It seems like video is replacing books for information delivery and entertainment.

In school, you will have to read large amounts of content daily. In college and university you will be reading and processing large amounts, dozens and dozens of pages a day.

I read a book or a text at least twice.

FIRST READING – relaxing chair, cup of tea

- quiet place, earplugs, helps with concentration

- Turn off the phone! – hurts your concentrate

- minimize the distractions

-multitasking is lie- You cannot do two activities that require brainpower at once. i.e. listening to music and studying at the same time

- First reading – read for basics of the story: setting,

characters, conflict, plot

SECOND READING- school desk, with a pencil

**- make notes- You have to make notes on what you read.

- jot down key words and ideas as you read them, “quotations”

I use a computer now, but I used to use pencil and paper.

You have to make notes because you will forget. If you refresh the new information, it will be gone in three days.

-Keep your notes in a safe place. You can go back and refer to your notes many years later. The notes will jog your memory of what the content of the book was. You can use text notes or mind maps. Mind maps are visual representation of information.

Notetaking is a very powerful tool.

I don’t make notes on every book I read. I do keep notes of things that jump out at me while I am reading. I keep notes on my phone. To be honest, all of my notes are a big mess right now.

Our class blog is just a collection of notes from the daily class.

KEY POINT: I am making the notes, not you. You have to make your own notes.

My reading routine is first reading and second reading. Then I feel like I am ready for class. It takes time, but you get faster and better at it with practice.

I am a person who sets goals for myself.

My personal daily goal for reading is 50 pages of a book.

One week is about one book.

Your personal daily goal for reading could be XX pages.

NOTE: If you are a person who does not usually read, a good to start reading is to pick up a book that is on a topic that you find interesting.

e.g. science, sports, fashion, architecture, movies, music, history, war, cooking, etc.

It is an enjoyable experience to read about a topic that you are interested in.

PERSONAL OPINION: If you watch Tiktok and Youtube videos all the time, your brain will turn to mashed potatoes.

Youtube is nice, but it is like eating baby food.

You must sink your teeth into a good book.

idiom – sink your teeth into Biology 12.

You really get into the work; you study hard.

Joan really sunk her teeth into her new job. She is really giving it her best effort.

Jun is sinking his teeth into a new healthy lifestyle.
