EF6 8:30 June 10

Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Cameras on. Mics muted.

Today’s agenda:

1.    Test#3 -Literary paragraph about “Roses Sing on New Snow”

2.    Sentence combining from homework

Writing about a short story.

Paragraph – 150-200 words

Structure of the paragraph

Grabber (optional)

Topic sentence – closely connected to the question

e.g What is the setting of “Roses Sing on New Snow”?

Topic sentences- directly linked to that question

                               - borrow words from the question

                               -use synonyms

The setting of “Roses Sing on New Snow” is a Chinatown in North America, probably Vancouver, about 100 years ago.

SUPPORTING SENTENCES – giving evidence

E11 or E12 question: How does the setting of “Roses Sing on New Snow” affect how Maylin is a dynamic character?

TS:

The setting of “Roses Sing on New Snow” affects how Maylin changes in three ways.

NOTES TO BE WRITTEN INTO SENTENCES

cultural setting

1.difference in status between the governor and Maylin, forces Maylin to speak up for herself

2.lower position of women in the family, Mayline has to become a leader in her family because brothers and father are useless

3.societal perception of women as being unable to be community leaders- Maylin overcomes this – wise, respected- in Chinatown and China

When we write about short stories, just write about the story. Answer the question.

Don’t use first person, “I”. You are not in the story. The question is not about you. The question is about the story.

e.g. I read the story. I really liked it. For me, Maylin...

Do not write a plot summary. I am not asking you to retell the story.

e.g. A young named Mayline spend all of her days cooking in  the restaurant that was owned by her father. One day, there was a special visitor...

Understanding the plot if only the first level of understanding a story.

If you write a plot summary, it just won’t get a mark.

Question?

Answer directly connected to the question.

Good example question.

Why does Maylin call her dish “Roses Sing on New Snow”?

PREWRITING- PLANNING- 3-4 points

Roses – Maylin, new immigrant, flower beautiful, tough (snow), blossoming (new country)

Sing- joyful, happy, hopeful, expressing emotion (like cooking), positive emotion

New Snow – new country, fresh start, allusion to ‘New World’

WRITING paragraph

BASIC TS    Maylin calls her dish “Roses Sing on New Snow” for three reasons.

BETTER TS When Maylin cooks/creates/makes her special/signature/ dish for the banquet for the governor, she chooses special/specific/symbolic/meaningful words to describe it. The words “Roses”, “Sing” and “New Snow” have a lot of meaning/significance to her.

The story “Roses Sing on New Snow” revolves around a young woman, Maylin, creating a dish of the same name. When Maylin creates her dish for the banquet for the governor, she chooses meaningful words to describe it. The words “Roses”, “Sing” and “New Snow” have a lot of significance to her. First of all, the word “Roses”means EXAMPLES. Second, “Sing” could mean EXAMPLES. Finally, “New Snow” refers to EXAMPLES. All in all, for Maylin, it seems that the name of the dish is as important as the taste.

indirect:

She might...

It could...

The word “Roses” may

direct:

The “Roses” refers to Maylin herself as a young women blossoming like a flower in a new country.

I will ask you a straightforward question about the story. It will not be a difficult, tricky question. If you have read the story a few times and engaged with our class discussion, you should be fine to write a decent paragraph.

It is tough to find good stories that are interesting but that appropriate for EF6 level students.

There are many of compilations of short stories that have question at the end of story. If I were you, I would go to the library and talk to a librarian. They might be able to suggest some anthologies of short stories that you can read.

e.g. fables – simple but deep meaning
