EF6 8:30am June 15

Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Cameras on. Mics muted.

Today’s agenda:

1.    Quoting words and phrases “ “

Consider your examples from homework

2.    “The Ninny”. Consider the questions. I emailed this to you Friday.

3.    Sentence combining from homework TOMORROW

Test#4 “The Ninny” paragraph Thursday

“ “ quoting from a story

1.    Quote only a few words. If you quote a whole sentence, or more than a few words, that’s not right.

If you writing 10 page papers, you can quote longer passages; however, for a 150-200 word paragraph you must keep the quotations to just a few words.

Goal: choose 1-4 words to quote.

2.    Incorporate the quoted word into you writing. Make the quoted words fit into your sentence.

e.g. “fine food”

Maylin worked very hard to cook “fine food” for her customers.

Maylin worked very hard to cook well for her customers: “fine food”. XXX NO!

The quoted words must be part of the sentence.

Let’s see some of your example from homework:

1.    The governor “eyes lit up” when “Roses Sing on New Snow” arrived  on his table.

The governor’s “eyes lit up” when Roses Sing on New Snow arrived  on his table.

apostophe ‘s

2.    She cooked and designed the dishes not just to fulfill her duty; in addition, she loved to "renew the spirit" of those "bone-tired" men.

NOT THE SAME XXX

"renew the spirit"

“renew their spirits”

RW – works much better

She cooked and designed the dishes not just to fulfill her duty; in addition, she loved to bring comfort to those “bone-tired" men and “renew their spirits”.

3.    He is fat because of his "overeating".

4.    Maylin cooks meals using “only the best ingredients” for customers.

   NOT ‘

The difference is not important right now.

5.    Maylin refuse the governor because he "cannot recreate the dish"

Maylin refuses the governor because he "cannot recreate the dish". punc agr

6.    The governor’s “face paled" when he tasted his own dish even though the ingredients are the same.

7.    Maylin works very hard “every week” at her father’s restaurant.

8.    Maylin and the governor cooked ''side by side'' in the same way.

9.    the governor chopsticks “dipped eagerly” into each food.

10.                       Maylin made food for "bone-tired" men that changed their spirits and encouraged them in a foreign country.

11.                       Even Maylin’s father doesn’t treat her well. She never gave up on being a cook because she “loved food.” frag

FIX

Even though Maylin’s father doesn’t treat her well, she never gave up on being a cook because she “loved food.”

12.                       Her father “hung his head in shame”, because He didn’t cook the food. punc cap

Her father “hung his head in shame” because he didn’t cook the food.

That is a really good start with quotations.

You really have to start focusing on the details such as punc and cap.

For our paragraph on Thursday, I want you to put a few quotations into your writing. You can look at the story. If a teacher wants you to quote a few things, they have to let look at the story. Nobody expects you to remember the exact words of the story.

In a 150-200 word paragraph, who many quotations would be good?

One is not enough. If you have 3-4 points, then 3-4 short quotations should be perfect.

Like spicy peppers in food, a little goes a long way. Just a few is enough.

Use “ “ for this class.

Maylin was trying to teach the governor a lesson about individuality and cultural differences when she asked him about two people being able to create “identical paintings”. She wanted him to understand that cooking was much more than just mixing ingredients together.

The test on Thursday will be on “The Ninny”

The Ninny

“standing on ceremony”-     ceremonial, too polite to ask,

He owes her money, but she is too polite to ask for it.

He owes her wages, and he should pay her. He doesn’t pay her because she does not ask for her money.

He is abusing his power as a boss by not paying her on time and what she is owed.

He is taking advantage of her politeness.

“nitwit” “ninny” “spineless” – insults, fool, dummy, no backbone, allows themselves to be pushed around, allows people to take advantage of them, allows people to mistreat them

This is a story of human nature.

Common struggle for many people- learning to be assertive, learning to stand up for yourself

governess- live-in teacher, tutor, take care of the children, au pair, nanny and teacher, responsibility for childcare

“Yulia Vasilyevna blushed and picked at the trimmings of her dress”

blush- face turns red from embarassment or shame, turn beet red

- nervous reaction, kept her hands busy while she feels nervous

self-soothing

This speaks to Yulias’s state of mind. She is nervous and distressed by this man’s actions. She is very anxious.

The terrible thing is that this man is doing it on purpose. He is intentionally trying to make her feel ill-at-ease.

This is what I despise about this character, the man; that he is using his

position of power to intimidate this young woman who is relatively

powerless, at least compared to him.

boss, partner, VIP customer, teacher, building owner, landlord,

government worker, doctor, parent, sibling, friend, relatives, care

providers

SETTING – time, place

Russia – author is Russian, rubles, names sound Russian

time? year? long time ago – 100 years ago, Chechov lived in 19th C.

died 1904,
