We are almost finished our full review of sentence types.

Next week, we will begin paragraph writing. You have to have your sentences down pat.

 

 

NOUN CLAUSES:

NOUN CLAUSES – SV, acts like a noun

 

Noun clauses – use verbs – mind, brain

A. think, understand, know, feel, believe, remember, forget, say

 

B. use these words (pronouns, adverbs): that how why what

 

A + B = make a noun clause

 

In general, EF6 student find noun clauses to be not that difficult.

 

think that

I think that SV.

I think that it will be sunny tomorrow. main clause noun clause

I think that it will be sunny tomorrow. I think it will be sunny tomorrow.

You can omit ‘that’. I’m not going to teach that today.

Judy thinks that you should get your hair cut short.

I understand what you mean.

I understand what your meaning is. overwritten, not authentic

I don’t understand what you are talking about.

 

understand + why

The little kid doesn’t understand why he can’t eat ice cream for breakfast.

 

know + why

Julia knows why SV.

Julia knows why I am late.

I don’t know why my daughter is mad at me today.

I don’t know why I’m so tired today.

I’m so tired today. I don’t know why. two simple sentences

 

You can use noun clauses in past, present, and future.

past tense: I didn’t know why my dog was sleeping so much.

present tense: Sarah doesn’t know why her daughter is so happy today.

future tense: Junko will never understand why her brother left Japan.

Please clearly say what you mean.

I can’t say what I really think because she will get mad.

This level of writing is appropriate for UBC, job, VCC, and any business or personal writing.

 

Junko believes that she will get a good job when she finishes college. main clause + noun cl + adverb cl

 

I did not teach ‘if’, for noun clauses, but it seems fine.

She does not know if her sister will come to the party.

 

I don’t teach ‘if’ for noun clauses because people will confuse it with ‘if’ for adverb clauses.

 

To avoid confusion, I focus on the clearest words I can think of for noun clauses:

A. think, understand, know, feel, believe, remember, forget, say

B. that how why what

A + B = make a noun clause

Excellent start. Really good complex sentences with noun clauses.
