Prepositions are challenging. There are no easy rules to follow. It’s all about getting exposure to authentic English.


ADVICE: For school writing or business writing, avoid using 

exclamation points.

FANBOYS mneumonic -memory device

FANBOYS – for and nor but or yet so -not that helpful

Some of FANBOYS, we don’t use much in compound sentences.

FANBOYS – for and nor but or yet so

for: Maria is wearing a sweater, for it is cold today. UNUSUAL

Maria is wearing a sweater because it is cold today. AUTHENTIC

for: I have a present for you. not compound


nor: Junko does not speak French, nor does she speak Italian. UNUSUAL

SOUNDS LIKE A GRAMMAR BOOK

Junko does not speak French or Italian. AUTHENTIC


yet: It is cold today, yet she is at the beach. UNUSUAL

It is cold today, but she is at the beach. AUTHENTIC


FANBOYS = SOBA use everyday, all day long

SOBA , so  ,or  ,but  ,and HIGH FREQUENCY COORDINATORS


ADVICE: Forget about FANBOYS. Stick with SOBA.


Examples of SOBA in compound sentences:

The baby was awake all night, so her parents are exhausted.

You can go to school, or you can get a job.

The cat is asleep, but the dog is awake.

I like camping, and I like hiking.


SV , SOBA SV.
