COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE

compound + complex together

I like dogs. She likes cats because they are cool.

I like dogs, but she likes cats because they are cool.

who - people

that- things, animals

which – special things, unique things

3.9% of the time

whose - possessive

where- place

.1% of the time

whom- object pronoun

Even though you studied it and did tests on it, ‘whom’ is not important.

As an English speaker, I never use ‘whom’ in writing or speaking.

You can decide what you want to do.

*** One exception to my rejection of ‘whom’

To whom it may concern,

-when you are writing a letter to an unknown recipient

e.g. You are sending letter to businesses. You do not know who will be reading the letters. You can use “To whom it may concern,”

I sometimes use this when I write reference letters for students.

To whom it may concern,

Dear Sir or Madam,

To the admissions chair,

The woman who you were talking to seems really nice.

who you were talking to  O S V   ‘who’ is an object pronoun

Two choices:

1.We can omit an object pronoun.

The woman you were talking to seems really nice.

2. We can use ‘whom’.

The woman whom you were talking to seems really nice.

You can use ‘whom’ when you have an object pronoun.

In reality, English speakers don’t bother with ‘whom’. We just say ‘who’ or omit it.

This is my friend who I have known for 10 years.

This is my friend who I have known for 10 years.

This is my friend I have known for 10 years. very natural-sounding

This is my friend whom I have known for 10 years. very unnatural

‘Whom’ is a grammar book word.

This is my friend that I have known for 10 years. ‘that’ for a person, does not sound friendly

This is a friend of mine that/who I have known for 10 years.

‘Who’ sounds a lot better than ‘that’ for people.

whose -possessive

This is my friend whose sister I have worked with for 10 years.

whom- object pronoun

You can decide what to focus on.

Playing music: I focus on the most practical chords, figures that I use everyday. I don’t have time and energy to go down rabbitholes of musical ideas that I will never use.

My advice is to forget about ‘whom’. We never use it. If you do use it, you will sound like a grammar book.
