  Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Cameras on. Mics muted.

Today’s agenda:

1.                Continue with paragraphs

2.                Idioms

OR

3.                Topic for small-group discussion or discussions in breakout groups: The internet is harmful to children.

Reflect on this topic. Come prepared to contribute to a small-group tomorrow.

Step 1 – sentence work

Step 2- paragraph work

Paragraphs in EF6- approximately 150-200 words, not too short, not too long, sweet spot

-7-10 sentences

Most important part of a paragraph is the organization/structure.

it’s easy to write and write and write with no direction or structure.

We want to write short, dense, concise, well-organized paragraphs.

Structure of a paragraph

-Grabber/Hook (OPTIONAL)- attention-getter (7 ways)

-Topic sentence- gives the topic & the controlling idea **VERY IMPORTANT**

-Supporting sentences (aim for 3-4 points)- details, evidence, support, ‘meat’ of the paragraph

-Concluding sentence- restatement of the topic sentence

-possibly restatement of the supporting points (more for an essay)

                                         -sum up

-a way to close up the paragraph

Some people will already be familiar with this. For some it will be new.

Grabbers/Hooks

                     - begins a piece of writing

- optional attention-getting device for writing

- for essays, for paragraphs

- grabs the reader’s attention, makes them pay attention

- adds some zest, some life, some energy to the start of the writing

Some examples of grabbers

                                                             i.      -general to specific statement, funnel

-say something big and general, then narrow it down to specific focus of the topic sentence

-funnel

Why did you decide to live in Canada?

Grabber (funnel)

There are almost 200 countries in the world, and many of them are very attractive. However, for me, Canada was the number #1 choice of where I wanted to live.

                                                           ii.      -short anecdote

short personal story

personalizes, first person “I”

**The whole paragraph does not have to be first-person.

When I was a little kid growing up in Tehran, I always dreamed of living abroad. When I was 25, I had a chance to move to Canada.

                                                        iii.      -historical reference

Canada has been a country for only 153 years. It is also a country of immigrants, aside from First Nations. For hundreds of years, settlers have come to Canada to make a new life and a fresh start.

                                                        iv.      -fact or statistic

80%, four out of five, 2/3 of ..., 37,000,000 people...

21% of all Canadians are first generation. Of the 37 million people in the country, 8 million are first generation. It is a country of immigrants.

                                                           v.      -question (answered by thesis statement)

Why did you decide to live in Canada?

PICK ONE GRABBER     Have you ever lived in another country? Have you ever emigrated from your home and immigrated to a new country? If so, why did you leave? How did you choose which country to immigrate to? TS I chose to come to Canada for my new life because of three reasons.

The topic sentence is connected directly to the question.

The grabber is a fluffy relaxed intro to the paragraph.

vi.      -relevant quotation by a famous person

Books of quotations.- Have some quotations in your memory. It is very helpful to reference them when you are writing.

https://wordsmith.org/awad/

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “[P]eople wanting to build a better life for themselves and their kids is what created Canada” (www.brainyquote.com).

Chairman Mao Tse Dong said, “Women hold up half of the sky.”

-grey area Where did I hear this? I don’t remember.

****** This does not mean you can copy from the internet and hand it in to be marked. That is plagiarism.******

vii.      -relevant idiom from any language, proverb, saying, expression

-sometimes translate well, have a lot of meaning

Do you have a positive saying about immigration in your language?

In ABC language, we say that immigrating to a new country is like getting new blood in your veins. You are reborn in the new place.

In Chinese, we have a proverb that says, “If a tree is moved, it may die; if a man person moves, he they will make a good life.” TS I wanted to come to Canada to make a new life for me and my family.

man – means everybody?

woman – just means woman?

Pssssssffffff!

In Brazil, we say “Those who do not risk, do not have a snack.” That means that you have to take risks in life in order to get benefits. TS I took a big risk coming to Canada. However, I wanted to try to immigrate here for three reasons.

In Ethiopia, we say, “Instead of staying out of work, it’s better to play with shit.” Instead of staying home in my old country with no work or bright future, I decided to start a new life in a new country. Coming to Canada was hard, but I’m glad I did.

These grabbers can make your paragraph really fun, or serious, or academic, or silly, or whatever tone you are going for.

The grabber can set the tone.

tone- feeling, emotion of the writing

7 grabbers to choice from -  Choose the one you feel fits best.

The grabber will be just one sentence, maybe two. It will be a short intro to the paragraph. The examples that I gave were 20-40 words.

Use your best judgement. Does the grabber feel too short? Does your grabber feel too long?

Grabber comes first in a paragraph.

                                                             i.      -general to specific statement, funnel

                                                           ii.      -short anecdote

vi.      -relevant quotation by a famous person

vii.      -relevant idiom from any language, proverb, saying,

Nerdy idea -Writing is really fun and creative. You are limited only by your imagination.
