Verbs Followed by Either Infinitives or Gerunds


These verbs can be followed by either an infinitive or a gerund with no difference in meaning: 


begin, start, continue, like, love, prefer, hate, can’t stand


-infinitive: to go, to sleep, to eat, to run

-gerund: going, sleeping, eating, running


like + to eat   I like to eat Ethiopian food.

like + eating   I like eating Ethiopian food.


-It began to rain.

It began raining.


-The baby started to cry.

The baby started crying.


-Maria will continue working at the office.

Maria will continue to work at the office.


-I love talking to you.

I would love to talk with you.

Shelley loves to ski.

Shelley loves skiing.


-I prefer reading a book at night.

I prefer to read a book at night.

I don’t have German down, yet. My German is okay, but I still have a long way to go.

I am working on getting my English down. It is hard, but I’m trying. It’s getting better all the time.
