Compound sentences-

, SOBA – most useful, high frequency, used most often, ever day, all day long

Combine the sentences in each exercise using ,SOBA.

1. David likes to swim. He hates to hike.

2. John likes video games. John likes reading.

3. Stephen must study. Stephen will not pass the test.

4. Jill should show up on time. Jill will not be able to enter.

Some people love semicolon and use them all the time. Some people never use them. I use them when I want the sentence to stand out. They make the sentence look fancy and special. Don’t use them too much.


STEP 3 – transitional terms with semicolons


-I want to go swimming, but I have a cold. , SOBA

Three ways to write compound sentences:

1. SV , SOBA SV.

2. SV; SV.

3. SV; TRANS, SV.


; replaces , so   ,or   ,but   ,and




You have a lot of choice. You have to figure out how to do each way.


I like cats, but she likes dogs. COMPOUND

I like cats; she likes dogs. COMPOUND

I like cats; however, she likes dogs. COMPOUND

I like cats. However, she likes dogs. TWO SIMPLES


These can all substitute for each other. They can fit in for each other. They can replace each other.


Just like a recipe- substitute honey for sugar, substitute chicken for beef

Music – C7 substitute F#7, G substitute Bm 


 Janet plays violin; in addition, she sings.

Jane does not eat meat; on the contrary, she is strictly vegetarian.

pescatarian - no meat except fish
