Good evening, everybody.
We will get started at 700.
Cameras on. Mics muted.
Everyday, I will put all of out work on our blog: haleyshec.blogspot.com
Today’s agenda:
• Review emails and attachments from homework
• Review viewing comments
• Talk about quiz and test format – font, timing, plagiarism
• Continue with review of sentence types – simple sentences
• Homework - Prepare for Quiz#1 tomorrow on simple sentences
If you are new today and today is your first class, welcome. You can see everything that we have done so far in our class blog: haleyshec.blogspot.com
We are not allowed to travel because of Covid, so I would like to show some beautiful spots form around Canada.
Today’s beautiful Canadian spot is Banff, Alberta.
Emails and attachments:
1. Subject line of your email must have certain information
Name, Class, Time, Quiz#
e.g. “Joe Chen, EF4, 7:00, Quiz#1”
*If you don’t put that information in the subject line, I will not know who you are. I can’t take time to figure it out. I have eight classes and 60 students.
2. Attach a .docx, .doc. or .rtf file.
I can’t put comments on .pdf files.
I hope you figured it out. If not, keep working on it.

Homework from Thursday- Send an email to me with an attached document.
If you sent me a that email, and I send it back, then you are halfway there.
*Viewing my comments in your document
I understand that it is frustrating finding software that will allow you to write to me and for me to comment on your writing. VSB Adult Education does not allow student access to Microsoft Word, so we have to figure it out on our own. That is unfair, but that’s the way it is. We have to find ways to make this work.
Almost all of you have figured out how to send attachments to me and how to read my comments. Nevertheless, a few students are still having trouble seeing my comments on their writing.
I use Microsoft Word to mark your writing and provide comments.
Microsoft Word is the software that Vancouver School Board provides to teachers. If you have MSWord, you should be able to view my comments on your writing.
*Go to the Taskbar - Review - Show Markup - Comments.
Free advice #1: Purchase or download a good word processor. Learn
how to use it. You will use it for years to come in school, work and life.
If you do not have MSWord, you may be able to view my comments on your writing using an online viewer.
I found this one: https://onlinedocumentviewer.com/Viewer/
It’s not perfect, but it is better than nothing.
You may be able to find another one that you like better.
Some of my other students said that they can read my comments using Pages on their MacBooks.
** Computer Basics and Writing- 11am, Kyle Kirkwood (computer
genius)
The big questions: Did you send me an email with an attachment?
Could you read my comments when I sent it back to you?
If Yes/Yes, then great!
If Yes/No, then we have to keep figuring it out.
If No/No, then do your homework!
** Quiz and Test Format
* Writing format
- All writing must be all in English.
It can’t be in Chinese or Russian or Arabic.
- Doublespace or use 1.5 space when writing paragraphs. It is much easier to read and comment on. SINGLE-SPACED
Doublespace or use 1.5 space when writing paragraphs. It is much easier to read and comment on. DOUBLESPACED
Doublespace or use 1.5 space when writing paragraphs. It is much easier to read and comment on. 1.5 SPACED
- Use 14-16 point font – point – the size of the letters
Sometime students use font that is too small. I can’t read that. This is too small to read. I will be blind if I try to read this. I won’t even try to read this.
Sometime students use font that is too big. This is too big. This is like a sign on the side of a business.
14-16 point font for quizzes, tests, and writing– standard for most writing, good balance of size
Try it now. Open a document and choose a 14-16 point font. Find the font size. Try it now. Could you change the font size?
Choose easily legible font. – style of letters
This is an easily legible font. Calibri
This is an easily legible font. Times New Roman
This is an easily legible font. Arial
Do you like this font? Georgia
This is not an easily legible font. ALGERIAN
This is not an easily legible font. GOUDY STOUT
This is not an easily legible font. Jokerman
This is not an easily legible font. Comic Sans
Do you like this font? Snap ITC - No, please!
Find a nice font that you like. Take a second and find one now.
-Timing on quizzes and tests.
I will give a deadline (time that the quiz is due)
No lates. Send it in on time.
If you have trouble with the deadlines, then maybe self-paced would be a better choice for you.
e.g. Just an example
Email the quiz to me as an attachment by 9:20.
9:20 is the deadline.
If you email it to me at 9:30pm, I‘m not going to give it points.
If you email it to me at 9:21pm, that’s ok, I guess.
If you email it to me at 9:23pm, that’s not ok.
Be punctual. The quizzes and tests come with timelines, deadlines.
I will tell you the deadline every time. It will be different every time.
- Plagiarism and cheating on marked work
This is an online class, so that means that you have access to the internet while we are doing quizzes and tests. You may not look up sentences, words, etc, during quizzes and tests. That is cheating.
When you do your driving test, are you allowed to check your phone for answers? No.
There is a certain level of trust that I have to have in you that you won’t cheat on my quizzes and tests. If you cheat on my quizzes and tests, and I find out, you will get a 0 and a letter in your file. To be honest, I won’t really want to teach you anymore. If I feel that I can’t trust you, I find it hard to have a good relationship with you as teacher/student.
I won’t cheat you. Please, don’t cheat me.
Spellcheck can cause a lot of problems for people with beginner-level English.
Using grammarcheck is cheating on a test.
Turn them off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to hear what you have to say. Show me YOUR writing, and I will help you make it better. It doesn’t matter if you make mistakes. Mistakes are good. Don’t hide your mistakes by getting the computer to fix them. Show them to me, and I can help you fix them yourself. Then you won’t have to use a translator, spellcheck, grammarcheck. You will be able to do it yourself.
