Mary helped the boy. ACTIVE VOICE 
- the subject is doing the verb, the action
-sounds strong

The boy was helped by Mary. PASSIVE VOICE 
- the subject is not doing the verb
-sounds weak

Other problems with passive voice:
1. complicated verb, easy to make a mistake
2. have to use a preposition
3. force the reader to read backwards
