Writing 567 Great Paragraphs Unit4 Supporting sentences

REVIEW
Topic sentences - first sentence in a paragraph
- interesting, specific, not too specific, also not too broad- balance
- topic + controlling idea

Unit 4- supporting sentences

Topic sentence : topic Washington, DC
controlling idea: great place to visit, East coast
The reader will make a prediction about the paragraph will be about. They make that prediction based on the TS.

Whatever the TS suggests, we want the Supporting Sentences to do that job.

If there is no TS, then the paragraph is like a ship without a rudder.

They are made for each other:
TS
Supporting sentences

Editing is very painful.
Cutting out information from a first draft is very difficult.

Return the rough writing from Friday- brainstorming, freewriting, getting ideas down on paper

1. Read your first draft.
2. Decide on a topic and a controlling idea.
3. Choose 4-5 supporting points.

4. Write a new draft. The new draft will more focused and shorter.
