Topic sentence - introduces the main idea of the paragraph

topic - focus of the paragraph, the thing that you want to write about
controlling idea - narrows the topic down to something very specific


ex.
Dogs - topic
narrow it down to a manageable, specific scope 
- relationships that dogs have with people
