Essays

sentences - paragraphs – essays – papers (10-20pp, take home research-based) – thesis (80-100pp, major paper, post-graduate) – book (300-600pp)

essays – multi-paragraph writing (3-6,7 paragraphs)

In English 12 Provincial Exam, an essay is about 300 words

e.g.

From a practice English 12 exam:

INSTRUCTIONS: In a multi-paragraph (3 or more paragraphs) expository essay of at least 300 words, answer question 2 in the Response Booklet.

NOTE: The Provincial Exams have changed in the past year. This model is not like the new exam. Your English 12 teacher will explain about the new exam.

- less focused on poetry and short stories

paragraph – (150-200 words)

essay – (300-400?) words

An essay is longer, but not that much longer.

Challenge- condense a lot of information into a nice short well-organized essay

You don’t have to write a book. 300-350,400 words- that’s plenty

More is not better.

Essay – French verb “to try”

essay – an attempt or try to write about a topic in depth, in full, in detail

multi-paragraph – approach a topic in an organized way

STRUCTURE

A. Introductory paragraph – short paragraph

Sets up the essay

a. Grabber

b. Thesis statement – addresses the topic directly, gives a controlling idea

- does the same job as a Topic Sentence in a paragraph

c. Predictor – gives a brief preview of your main points

(3,4,5 points)

B. Body paragraphs

depends on how many points you have

3 points – 3 body paragraphs

4 points – 4 body paragraphs

Write a full paragraph for each point:

Topic sentence and supporting sentences

Short, well-organized paragraphs

Body paragraphs in an essay will likely be shorter than standalone paragraphs. A standalone paragraph is 150-200w. You can’t write three or four like that in an essay, or your essay will wind up too long.

When writing a paragraph – tension between content and length. – sentence combining is very valuable to help you write denser sentences, every word counts

It’s not easy, but it gets easier with a lot of practice.

anxiety-inducing, worrying – practice will help with that a lot

C. Concluding paragraph – restatement, same ideas, different vocab, phrases

- repeat

Restate the Thesis statement

Restate your 3-5 points

End with a clincher – like a grabber at the end of the essay

ESSAY

Introductory paragraph

Body paragraphs (3-5)

Concluding paragraph

(300-350,400w)

English 11 – 70 minutes

English 12 – 30 minutes

MY LECTURE NOTES for The Jade Peony Ch 12

FRIENDLY ADVICE: Making good notes on whatever text you are reading for school is the best gift that you can give yourself. It is a powerful study aid. You can refer to the notes even years later, and they will help you recall what the information in the text is.

Good strategy for The Jade Peony: Read the Thought Questions first. They help you to focus on the right things. In other classes, you’ll be more on you own and will have to figure out what’s important in the text.
