Grabbers: very useful for paragraphs and essay

optional, don’t have to use them, make your writing more interesting, more engaging, better writing

grabber – hooks – attention-getting device that grabs your readers interest

Paragraph – short, one sentence

Essay – could be a bit monger, 2 sentences.

grabbers are short

7 types of grabbers that you can choose from:

1. anecdote – short personal story related to the topic, question

How is Jook Liang influenced by two cultures?

As a newcomer to Canada, I am raising my young children to understand Canadian culture Canada, but also to understand the culture of my home country: Iran. So too Jook Liang is a young girl who is growing up in Canada influenced by Canadian culture that she sees around her and Chinese culture which she gets from her family, especially Poh-poh.

ANECDOTE TOPIC SENTENCE

anecdote – usually would use first person: “I” my sister

Avoid first person when writing about a piece of fiction.

“I think that Jook Laing and Wang Bak were really good for each other. When I read the novel, I saw that they were good friends.” CUT “I”

“Jook Laing and Wang Bak were really good for each other. They were good friends.”

in my opinion, I just read a story, in my English class, we talked about

2. fact or statistic – number, %, $, fraction, 1/3, 5/8

According to Stats Can about 22% of all Canadians are immigrants. These newcomers often bring the culture of their home countries with them. At the same time, they must learn to live in Canadian culture. In the way Jook Liang is learning to live with two cultures: her Chinese culture and her Canadian culture.

3. general to specific statement

broad statement about life, world- move to something more on topic

Every child growing up is influenced by their surroundings: the outside world shapes them as much as their immediate family does. Jook Liang is also learning to live with two cultures: her Chinese family culture and her Canadian environmental culture.

4. Historical reference – some relevant information from history

From the very beginning, Canada had always been a

country of immigrants. There have been hundreds of languages and cultures present in our tapestry. Jook Liang’s life in Canada is also influenced by a mix of cultures: her family culture, and her public life.

5. Question? begin by asking a question

How many cultures do you live in?

What are the cultural influences on your life? Jook Liang is influenced by two cultures…

6. Adage, idiom, expression – from any language, your language, English. etc.

In Persian, there is an expression, “If you plant oats, you will get oats.” This means that children are influenced by their families. In the same way, Jook Liang is influenced by …

The tiger has tiger children. The mouse has mice children.

7. Famous quotation from a famous person- learn some good quotations, have a few in your mind

famous person like Confucius, Justin Beiber, etc.
