Good morning.

Today’s agenda:

1.               Continue with essay work

2.               Animal Farm Ch9

Wednesday - Animal Farm Ch 9

Thursday - Animal Farm Ch 10

Friday – substitute teacher

Monday- 5-paragraph essay on Animal Farm

Essays – 5-paragraph essays

3*5 essay

basic academic essay

- practical style, utilitarian style, not fancy, Ikea essay, Tab A goes into Slot B

Introductory paragraph

-Grabber (optional, but a really good idea) (choose which type of grabber that you want to use – 7 types)

-Thesis statement – topic, controlling idea

-Preview of three points

e.g. In a well-organized 5-paragraph essay, discuss whether or not the animals are following Old Major’s vision.

PREWRITING – make a plan

1.   Read the question, every word, five times. What is the question asking you to do?

2.   Generate ideas.

- regular animals are, pigs are not

1 not equal with the other animals, put themselves above the other animals – work, food

3 following the commandments – alcohol, beds, kill, wear clothes

2 pigs not focus on furthering the rebellion, but on other things like windmill and trade with humans

Are these three points separate and clear?

They seem ok.

3.   Organize – put them in order of time, space, importance

(10m)

WRITING- start to write sentences and paragraphs

Example of introductory paragraph:

grabber – general to specific statement

Many of us start off on a new project with high hopes and clear ideas. However, as time goes by and other people get involved, those plans can change and even go off the rails. In Animal Farm, although the animals begin their rebellion with the purest and clearest of intentions, the rebellion is quickly taken over by the pigs who subvert Old Major’s vision in order to suit their own purposes. First, they hold themselves higher than the other animals. Also, they do not focus on spreading the rebellion to other farms. Most importantly, the pigs break several of the 7 Commandments.

(a little bit long)

preview

3 BODY PARAGRAPHS- one for each of the 3 points

1.   Topic sentence – higher than other animals

2.   Topic sentence- don’t spread rebellion

3.   Topic sentence – break commandments

Concluding paragraph – restatement of thesis, points

In Animal Farm, although the animals begin their rebellion with the clearest of intentions, the rebellion is quickly taken over by the pigs who subvert Old Major’s vision in order to suit their own purposes.

RESTATE – same information in different words, depth of vocabulary

e.g. Clearly, the pigs do not follow Old Major’s vision as they take the farm away from the other animals trick by trick, lie by lie.

Monday – 2 hours to write an essay

You can take your time and not be stressed about it.

In English 12, you will have to write an essay in about 30 minutes.

This essay writing practice in E10 and E11 will get you ready for that.
