Monday- 5-paragraph essay on Animal Farm

Five-paragraph essay

Introductory paragraph

-grabber

-thesis statement – refer directly to the question, addresses

the topic directly

Writing prompt: How are the pigs taking over the farm?

Thesis statement – mirror vocabulary from the writing prompt

- use the same vocab or use synonyms

pigs taking over farm

BASIC: The pigs are taking over the farm in three ways.

-won’t get top marks, but it’s ok

MORE INTERESTING: In the novel Animal Farm, the pigs start to seize control of the workings of the farm in a few key ways.

- better vocabulary, higher level writing, top marks

-Preview of your three points

Has to be 3 points in a 5-paragraph essay

Think of three good points – specific, distinct from each other

Why do you like Vancouver?

1.it’s good

2. it’s nice

3. I like it

Extremely low quality points.

1. access to parks and nature

2. good public schools

3. fresh air and water

A bit more interesting

1. freedom of speech

2. freedom of religion

3. freedom of movement

Not Vancouver, that’s Canada

1. ski in the morning

2. hike in the afternoon

3. cycle in the evening

Interesting?

1. close to Asia

2. speak mother language

3. home culture

More interesting

Essay – on topic, not boring, as interesting as possible, creative as possible

You don’t have to be super creative. Do your best.

Body paragraphs – (3 because you have given three points)

How are the pigs taking over the farm?

1. act like managers over the other animals

2. give themselves many special privileges

3. they make all the decisions, other animals can’t vote anymore

Concluding paragraph – restatement

- restate the Thesis statement

- restate the 3 points

- end with a clincher

e.g. THESIS STATEMENT: In the novel Animal Farm, the pigs start to seize control of the workings of the farm in a few key ways.

RESTATE: Clearly, as the story progresses, the pigs assert their dominance over the other animals in the farm.

over the running of what they rename Manor Farm.

On Monday, I will ask you a question about the novel. You will write a five-paragraph essay.

Chapter 10 Discussion Notes

pre-rebellion life forgotten, all original animals dead except Clover, Benjamin, Moses, some pigs

No animals ever retired

Benjamin more or less the same, more “morose” “taciturn” after Boxer

new horses, stupid, good workers, comrades, accept everything

farm prosperous- animals not richer, except dogs and pigs

many dogs and pigs

pigs write reports, immediately burned (87)

no memory/ context to compare quality of life

Benjamin recalls, cynical- not better or worse

Squealer spins

Animals feel hope “sense of honour and privilege” (87)

“imperishable pride” “old heroic days” (88)

patriotic about Animal Farm

“All animals were equal”

Squealer reeducates sheep: “Four legs good, two legs better!”

Pigs on hind legs, Napoleon with whip

Benjamin reads aloud single commandment (90)

“All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.”

pigs wear clothes, smoke pipe, carry whips

Big meeting, final scene of book

all friends, speechifying, toasting

model farm “did more work and received less food” (92)

common “labour problems” “you have your lower animals... we have our lower classes” (92)

Napoleon not “subversive” or “revolutionary”, just want “normal business relations”

farm co-op “owned by the pigs jointly” (93)

renamed “Manor Farm”

big fight, card cheats, indistinguishable- read final paragraph (95)

What do you think will happen next on Animal Farm?

Will the animals rebel again?

Good morning.

We’ll get started at 11.

Today’s agenda:

1.               Continue with essay work

2.               Animal Farm Ch9

Wednesday - Animal Farm Ch 9

Thursday - Animal Farm Ch 10

Friday – substitute teacher

Monday- 5-paragraph essay on Animal Farm

Essays – 5-paragraph essays

3*5 essay

basic academic essay

- practical style, utilitarian style, not fancy, Ikea essay, Tab A goes into Slot B

Introductory paragraph

-Grabber (optional, but a really good idea) (choose which type of grabber that you want to use – 7 types)

-Thesis statement – topic, controlling idea

-Preview of three points

e.g. In a well-organized 5-paragraph essay, discuss whether or not the animals are following Old Major’s vision.

PREWRITING – make a plan

1.   Read the question, every word, five times. What is the question asking you to do?

2.   Generate ideas.

- regular animals are, pigs are not

1 not equal with the other animals, put themselves above the other animals – work, food

3 following the commandments – alcohol, beds, kill, wear clothes

2 pigs not focus on furthering the rebellion, but on other things like windmill and trade with humans

Are these three points separate and clear?

They seem ok.

3.   Organize – put them in order of time, space, importance

(10m)

WRITING- start to write sentences and paragraphs

Example of introductory paragraph:

grabber – general to specific statement

Many of us start off on a new project with high hopes and clear ideas. However, as time goes by and other people get involved, those plans can change and even go off the rails. In Animal Farm, although the animals begin their rebellion with the purest and clearest of intentions, the rebellion is quickly taken over by the pigs who subvert Old Major’s vision in order to suit their own purposes. First, they hold themselves higher than the other animals. Also, they do not focus on spreading the rebellion to other farms. Most importantly, the pigs break several of the 7 Commandments.

(a little bit long)

preview

3 BODY PARAGRAPHS- one for each of the 3 points

1.   Topic sentence – higher than other animals

2.   Topic sentence- don’t spread rebellion

3.   Topic sentence – break commandments

Concluding paragraph – restatement of thesis, points

In Animal Farm, although the animals begin their rebellion with the clearest of intentions, the rebellion is quickly taken over by the pigs who subvert Old Major’s vision in order to suit their own purposes.

RESTATE – same information in different words, depth of vocabulary

e.g. Clearly, the pigs do not follow Old Major’s vision as they take the farm away from the other animals trick by trick, lie by lie.

Monday – 2 hours to write an essay

You can take your time and not be stressed about it.

In English 12, you will have to write an essay in about 30 minutes.

This essay writing practice in E10 and E11 will get you ready for that.

"Stepmother went upstairs to her bedroom..." p276 READ TO END

“the carved pendant” the jade peony

MY OPINION – the jade peony was passed from the juggler to Poh-poh, from Poh-poh to Sek Lung, from Sek Lung to his mother

- symbol of love from one person to another

- through line that moves through generations

- acceptance of mother into the family, finally

- beloved family heirloom

- cements a bond between people – juggler+Pohpoh, Pohpoh+Sekky, Sek Lung+StepMother

The ambiguity of symbols is what makes them interesting. Lack of simple clarity fires your imagination.

Canada – maple leaf – not interesting, nowhere to go, nothing to imagine

“Her guitar strings were like the vapour trails of six jet engines.”

more interesting, fires the imagination- suggest travel, motion, fleetingness, impermanence

Good novels and poetry like good art should fire your imagination and make you ask questions; not give you answers.

Class discussion on ideas of Japanese interment

1. Why do you think the Canadian government did what they did?

2. Was the Canadian government right to do this?

3. What would you have done if you were in charge at the time?

After the war ended in 1945, the Japanese were given a choice by the Canadian government:

1. stay in Canada away from the coast, not allowed to go back to Vancouver

2. move to Japan

Many people moved to Japan and had a hard time; later they moved back to Canada.

Difficult part of Canadian history.

Eventually, the Canadian government recognize that this was a very bad decision and changed it. In the 1980s the government apologized for this mistreatment of Japanese/Canadians.
