Today’s agenda:
1. Using quoted material
2. Sentence combining exercises
3. Shapes of sentences: coordination and subordination.
4. HW Read “The Wise Woman of Cordoba”.
We will start to work on that story Wednesday.
Using quoted material in our paragraphs
- borrowing words and very short phrases from a story
- “ “ quotation marks
3 uses of quotation marks:
1. Titles of short stories “Roses Sing on New Snow”
e.g. Maylin is the protagonist in the short story “Roses Sing on New Snow”.
She cooked a dish called Roses Sing on New Snow.
For your information, a novel or book title is underlined or written in italics.
e.g. The History of Language or The History of Language
Use italics when you are typing.
Underline when you are writing by hand.
2. Direct speech-exact words somebody said
e.g. Marie said, “Come over for supper next Friday night.”
Indirect speech – not exact words, the overall meaning
e.g. Marie told me to come over for supper next Friday night.
3. NEW INFORMATION
Quoting material and incorporating it into our own writing
- 1,2,3,4 words, That’s it.
- Less is more! Shorter is better.
- include those words into our own sentence that we wrote
PRO TIP #3: When you are reading a story for school, find some words or very short phrases that you might want to borrow when it comes time for you to write about it.
e.g. “special banquet”
Write your own sentence and include those words inside it.
e.g. Maylin put her heart into cooking a signature dish for the “special banquet” that the people of Chinatown put on for the governor.
The quoted words are incorporated into my sentence. They are grammatical.
e.g. “delectable flavors and aromas”
The governor enjoyed the “delectable flavors and aromas” of Maylin’s food.
It is like mounting a jewel in a ring. Make the ring to fit the jewel.
You have to be reasonable about this. Are you using the word because it is your word that you normally use? Are you using the word because it is from the story?
Maylin was a cook in her family’s restaurant. everyday word, not special, no “ “
e.g “warmest praise”
The governor saved his “warmest praise” for Maylin.
Don’t overdo the quotations. In a paragraph of 150-200 words, 3,4,5 quotations is enough. A little bit goes a long way.
Avoid using one quotation in a paragraph answer.
The quoted material makes your answer stronger. It acts as proof that your idea is a good one. It is evidence for your argument.
Try some in chat. Pick a word or two from the story, and incorporate the text into a sentence of your own.
1. Maylin never receive any "compliments and tips" as her father always told the lie to everybody.
2. The father and brothers "forced" Maylin to demonstrate how to cook Roses Sing on New Snow.
3. Maylin was told to by her father to "spare no expense" and cook a new dish.
4. Maylin’s cuisine turned a “lonely and cold and bone-tired” man into a happy and content person.
5. Maylin even dared to ask the governor to cook with her “side by side”.
6. They had to keep her in "prison''. ‘prison’ does not appear in the story
They had to keep her in prison.
7. Maylin lived in a land called "the New World".
8. Maylin had to cook something, but ’’ not to spare his expenses’’.
9. The governor failed to copy the "most delicious New World dish" back to China.
The governor failed to take the fabulous "New World dish" back to China.
10. Maylin worked hard to upgrade the dishes of her father`s resturants with fine ingredients. NO QUOTATION?
11. When she was brought to the banquet, she did not give the emperor a chance to taste his '' wonderful creation'', saying that her dish could not be created by anyone else. DON’T COPY
Copy from the story, get a 0. That is plagiarism.
When she was brought to the banquet, she did not give “the emperor a chance to taste this wonderful creation'', saying that her dish could not be created by anyone else. TOO LONG
12. Maylin soothes "cold and bone-tired" people.
13. Maylin create a new recipe and cook the new dish by name“Roses sing on new Snow “ XXX Not a sentence.
14. Maylin’s Roses Sing on New Snow dish becam very well known in both her local community and even as far as China itself. WHY IS THERE NO QUOTATION?
15. The governor told Maylin that he would make her “father's
life miserable" is she did not do what he said.
Choose a few words from the text and quote them in our own sentence that we wrote.
“identical ingredients”

This is a start for using quoted material in our writing. We will keep practicing this. It is challenging at first, but it will get easier and better with time and practice.
