Quoting work-

Using quoted text from a story:

1. when reading, make notes on key words, phrases that might be useful to you later

2. choose a few (1,2,3,4) words from a story

3. Incorporate them into our sentences

“a fool” – use this phrase or word to help illustrate a point

The governor was angry because he felt that the father and brothers were treating him like “a fool” when they lied about who had cooked the dish.

“impatient governor”

Maylin showed her courage when she challenged the “impatient governor” to a test that would prove her point to him.

Maylin showed her courage when she challenged the governor to a test that would prove her point to him: “impatient governor” XXX XXX Wrong.

When we write our paragraph about “The Wise Woman of Corboba”, we will put some quoted text into our answers.

In this class, we will only be dealing with one source or story at a time. There is no need to show sources.

For a short paragraph (150-200w) we want to keep the quotations to just a few words.

When you are writing longer papers (10, 20 pages) you can use longer quotations.

When you use quotations in a paragraph, don’t use just one. Use a few.

The most common mistakes when using quoted material:

1. writing a sentence that does not have the quoted material incorporated in a grammatical way.

2. quoting long phrases – 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 words

After “the governor pounded his fist on the chair, the truth quickly spilled out”, and the father was embarrassed. XXX XXX XXX

The governor was angry because he felt that the father and brothers lied about who had cooked the dish. “a fool” XXX XXX XXX

*** The quoted words have to be part of the sentence. ***

In Persian, we say “Everything gold will shine.” DIRECT SPEECH
