EF56 Using Quotations

Paragraph - "Totem" with quoted material

" " quotation marks

Here are some key points to remember when using quotations:

1) Incorporate quotations into your sentences.
It is your sentence. You will write yout oewn sentence. The quotations (1,2,3,4 words) will be inside your sentence.
Incorporate - make the quoted words part of your sentence

2) Keep quotations to a few words.  Quotations are like salt in food: a little bit of salt gives flavour; too much salt ruins the dish.

3) Use quoted material to support your points.
You have to make your points with your supporting sentences.

4) Don’t use too many quotations.  Pick two or three or four quotations to support your brainstormed points and leave the rest.

5) Make sure the quoted material is exactly as written in the story.  Use … and [ ] to make minor grammatical or stylistic changes.

6) Avoid repeating quotations.

7) After quoting material, go on to explain why the quotation is relevant.

8) Avoid ending paragraphs with a quotation.
Always end with your sentence.
