Last week, we worked on complex setnences with adverb clauses

Adverb Clauses

16 words and phrases used to make adverb clauses:

 

*time - when, while, whenever, before, after, until, since, as ____ as _______

*comparison - than, as ____ as _______

*reason, purpose or cause - because, since

*condition - if, unless, although, even though, though

 

 

Let’s write some sentences using these words from you own imagination. Try a few easy ones: because if when

Then try some harder words that you are less famliar with: than, until, unless

 

EXAMPLES:

If we keep trying, one day it will be completed. passive voice

I had been living in Richmond until last June.

had been living past perfect progressive- substitute past progressive

I was living in Richmond until last June. SIMPLE

I was living in Richmond until SV last June. COMPLEX- ADV CL

I was living in Richmond until we moved last June. COMPLEX- ADV CL

I have been living in Vancouver since last July.

This is all about having choice when you are writing and speaking.

“Dress Codes”

Let’s get into our small groups of 5-6 people and talk about the “Warm-Up Questions” and the “Vocabulary Preview”.

 

A.Warm-Up Questions

1.dress codes:

come-as-you-are- very casual or formal- up to you

casual

dressed down- business vocab “Casual Fridays”- a bit more relaxed

business casual

business dress- suit and tie- business suits for men and women

a suit - pants and jacket are the same (more formal)

a sportscoat – jacket is a different colour or shade than the pants (more casual)

formal

black tie- bowtie- weddings

white tie- tuxedo with or without tails

 

pink-shirt day- anti-bullying

orange-shirt day- Residential Schools

pink-ribbon- breast cancer

 

 

costume party- Superman costumes, Hallowe’en
