PHRASAL VERBS – very important to learn natural-sounding English

verb + preposition- two words together - one meaning

-look + out He looks out the window at the trees.

                     Parents look out for their children. protect

                     I look out for Butter when we are near a street.

 

burn + out = burn out Sarah feels burned out at work. very tired, feel exhausted

-burn out = a fire that goes out     The forest fires in BC will burn out soon, I hope.

 

-wake + up = wake up

-sleep + in = sleep in

-work + out = work out exercise  Mie works out three times a week.

work out – solve a problem           Jun has problems at work that she must work out.

You can make a plan to learn a few phrasal verbs every day. You can be  your own teacher.

The best way to learn and remember new phrasal verbs is to first study them and then use them in your daaly English.

The people who talk out loud are the people who learn English well.

 

 

The accent of English people and Canadian people can be a bit challenging and confusing.

UK and Canadian people use different vocabulary sometimes:

elevator – lift

trunk (of a car) – boot of a car

dessert- pudding

 

There are a lot of Australians who work at the ski hills in BC.

 

You have to get used to the accents of different people. Vancouver is a city of immigrants.

Compound sentences:

SOBA – so   or   but   and

SV, SOBA SV.

*so – reason

Today is sunny, so the temperature is warm.

*or - choice

You can have coffee, or you can have tea. COMPOUND

You can have coffee or tea. SIMPLE SV

You have to learn both types of sentences.

*but – difference, contrast

Joe’s son loves sports, but his daughter loves reading.

*and – plus

I love painting, and I love doing exercises.

 

Let’s practic writing some compound sentences from our own imaginations. Please work together. It’s more fun.

EXAMPLES OF COMPOUND SENTENCES:

He is running, and he is listening to music. COMPOUND

He is running and listening to music. SIMPLE SVV

 

I like to run, and I like to cook for my family.

I like running, and I like cooking for my family.

 

I don’t play football now, but I played it when I was a kid.

 

My son plays soccer and is a student. SIMPLE SVV

My son plays soccer, and he is a student. COMPOUND SV, SOBA SV.

 

It is sunny, so I wear sunglasses.

I live in Vancouver, but my son lives in Moncton.

 

I would like to go to Victoria on the weekend, but I am not sure.

I feel gloomy, so I don’t go to school today.

gloomy(adj)- sad, upset, depressed

He is a doctor, but he is not a good doctor.
