This is a very stong foundation for essential vocabulary.

essential(adj) – necessary, very important

 

Important to be able to spell. Spelling is challenge for many at this level.

Also, pronunciation of these 200 words is essential.

We can start to talk about them in a few minutes.

 

13. state(n)- a country,a part of a country, a situation

UAE is an oil-producing state.

Canada has 10 provinces. The US has 50 states. Brazil has 27 states. Syd comes from the state of Santa Catarina. Iran has 31 provinces.

Water is in a liquid state. Ice is in a solid state. Water vapour is a gas state. Water boils at 100 Celcius at Sea Level.

 

37. area- place, zone, profession or job

I take Butter to the off-leash area of the park. Dog parks and dog beaches are off-leash areas.

leash(n)- strap attached to a dog’s collar

You can’t smoke in the non-smoking area.

The area of your apartment is 80 sq m.

Area equals length times width.

This area is pick-up and drop-off zone.

Show business is making movies, TV, performing, theatre, singing, dancing, etc.

For newcomers to Canada, there are many issues. For example, the two biggest issues are learning English and getting a job.

Lateness is an ongoing issue for this student.

73. kid (n) – casual word for child, offspring, under 18 or 19

newborn- brand new, right from the hospital

baby- a few months old- to one year?

Parents are concerned when their children do not hit benchmarks for weight, speaking, walking, etc.

99. force(n)- strength, pressure, weight

The police force protects citizens. The air force is a part of the armed forces.

force(v)- push or pull hard, put a lot of energy behind something, to make someone do an action

She forced the stuck door open.

Verb tenses for EF 2,3

SIMPLE VERB TENSES

 

-simple present – usually, always, daily, habit, truth

He cleans his kitchen every Saturday morning.

She drinks green tea.

He likes dogs.

She lives in Kuwait.

He likes dogs. – area of focus- the subject and verb must agree, match

She lives in Canada.

 

-simple past- one time in the past- five minutes ago, last night, five years ago, 10000 years ago

He cleaned his kitchen last Saturday morning.

She lived in a small apartment in 1998.

She woke up at 7 o’clock in the morning yesterday.

Yesterday, I worked as a cashier for the second time.

Dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago.

I work as a JOB. I work as a teacher. You worked as administrator.

I work for EMPLOYER/COMPANY. I work for VSB. You worked for a clothing company.

**NOTE: Putting the time at the beginning or the end of the sentence helps to make the sentence clearer.

e.g Yesterday, we went to the park. We went to the park yesterday.

‘will’- You decide right now.
