Today’s agenda

These are the verb tenses that we have covered so far:

I water the garden. simple present

I watered the garden. simple past

I will water the garden. OR I am going to water the garden. simple future

 

ACTIVE VOICE     I watered the garden yesterday.

PASSIVE VOICE    The garden was watered by me yesterday.

 I watered the garden. simple past tense

The garden was watered by me. participle

 

The garden is watered by me every day. simple present

The garden will be watered by me. simple future

**My advice: Don’t use passive voice. Stiuck with active voice. 90% of the time we use active voice.

“Our Upcoming Family Vacation”

-coast- the beach, the edge of the land  and the ocean

coastline, the shore

-vacation- holiday, long-weekend, a few days or weeks of freetime

Some people get paid vacation.

Some people get a performance bonus on top of their salary.

-jellyfish – Some jellyfish will sting you. They can be dangerous.

Some people eat jellyfish. You can expand your palate.

-sandcastles- structures made out of damp sand

-tent- a place to sleep when you are camping, a shelter where you can stay dry, a portable home

Central-Asian nomads live in animal-skin tents called yurts.

nomad- people who have no home, traveling people

 

Eskimo Inuit traditionally made houses out of ice. The ice-houses were called igloos.

-soccer match, hockey game, tennis match, baseball game, cricket match, volleyball game, badminton match, basketball game, football game

cricket- a sport that is not popular in Canada, very popular in English, India, Sri Lanka, Pakisitan, Australia

Pickleball is a very popular game with older people.

-recital- performance

Her daughter had a piano recital. His son had a ballet recital.

-buddies- friends, pals, good friends

-BFF- Best friends, forever!  We are BFFs.

-buddy, pals- friends     I was talking to a buddy of mine.

I am going to watch the hockey game with the guys tomorrow.

-karaoke- singing songs in front of other people, watch the lyrics on a screen, music plays in the background, from Japan

You sing karaoke to instrumental music tracks.

Simple future verb tense-

Let’s write some simple and compound sentences from our imagination that use simple future verb tense.

‘will’

‘be going to’

 

For example:

1.My daughter will take the dog for a walk at 6 o’clock. SIMPLE SENT

2.We are going to have a test next week, but it will be easy. COMPOUND SENT

3.I will clean my house this weekend, and my sister will help me. COMPOUND SENT

4.Ali is going to have a test next week, so he will hit the books tonight.

5.I will go to the mall on the weekend, but I don’t think I will buy anything. COMPOUND SENT

6.I will immigrate to Canada, but first I will go see Europe. COMPOUND SENT

I will can make will make/ can make money. I will be able to make money.

7. I am going to pick up my son at school, and I am going to take him to his piano lesson.

 

8.I would like to go on vacation, but I don’t have holidays in my job. PRESENT TENSE

I will go on vacation, but I don’t know where.

SIMPLE FUTURE- ‘will’ and ‘be going to’

EITHER ONE IS OK:

I will pick my daughter up. SOUND MORE NATURAL

I will pick up my daughter.

 

would- maybe, if possible

I would like to go hiking tomorrow.  your feeling now

 

I am going to go shopping. simple future

I am going shopping. present progressive-suggests the future

I am going shopping tomorrow. suggests the future- SOUNDS FINE

 

SIMILAR/SAME MEANING

I am going outside, but I won’t be very long.

I am going to go/will go outside, but I won’t be very long. simple future

 

IDIOM: I won’t be long. short time, not a long time

won’t be = will not be

 

Tomorrow, I am going to celebrate my daughter’s birthday, so we are going to have dinner at a Chinese restaurant.

 

Will you buy a car for me?

Are you going to pick me up?

 

Are you going to take a class in the summer?

 

gonna AVOID! Only for casual talking and texting  ‘going to’

wanna- DELETE! ‘want to’
