Today’s agenda- Butter Day

Butter- breed- Golden Doodle – half poodle, half golden retriever

His mother was a golden retriever. His father was a poodle.

-almost nine years old

Dogs lift one paw when they feel uncertain.

Dogs do a play bow when they want to play.

A golden retriever is a hunting dog. His job is to retrieve things.

retrieve(v)- bring back

He loves to play ‘fetch’.

fetch- to go get something

 

Dogs shake and shiver when they are nervous.

Three kinds of sentences:

1.    SIMPLE

2.    COMPOUND

3.    COMPLEX

 

Simple Sentence

A simple sentence       -a subject and a verb

-expresses a complete thought.

 

Different types of simple sentences:

SV – 1 subject + 1 verb

SSV- 2 subjects + 1 verb

SVV- 1 subject + 2 verbs

SSVV-2 subjects + 2 verbs

Imperative (command)- tell someone to do something

Interrogative (question)- ask someone a question

 

* SV – 1 subject + 1 verb

Your friend is beautiful/handsome/funny.

Sarah does her homework at night.

Your brother works in construction.

 

*REMEMBER:

Begin with a capital letter.

End with a period.

 

**Don’t write in all capital letters. The only capital letters should be the first letter of the first word in a sentence and the first letter of proper nouns.

‘we’ plural- more than one, two or a thousand

 

proper nouns- caps

names of cities, days, months, countries, languages, people’s names, first person pronoun “I”, companies, landmarks

*SSVV- 2 subjects + 2 verbs

My husband and I cook and wash the dishes everyday.

Michelle and Dave clean the bathroom and do the laundry.

Examples of simple sentences:

You are a teacher and a mother. SV

Mohammad likes dogs but does not have a dog right now. SVV

Shira bought a new phone and sold her old one. SVV

Manuel is from Mexico but lives in Canada. SVV

 

** Thinking about SV helps to structure your sentence.

When I write for school or work, I always have SV in my mind.

SV = Subject Verb

 

PRACTICE:

Take put a piece of paper. Write some SV, SSV, SVV, SSVV simple sentences from your own imagination. Please work together if you wish. Try some imperative and interrogative questions.

 

YOUR EXAMPLES:

 She likes swimming and skating. SV gerunds- ‘ing’ nouns, look like verbs

Maria is good at NOUN. soccer/English/singing. singing-gerund

I will go to Richmond Centre.

I eat the (my) breakfast and go out.

He likes eating and watching TV. SV eating/watching- gerund(noun)

gerund- noun wirh ‘ing’, looks like a verb

 

She likes napping. Napping is wonderful. gerunds

 

Me and my friend My friend and I drink coffee.

 

She is interested in music.

She is interested in playing with you.

PHRASE interested in

 

My best friend and I are learning dance every Monday. SSV

My best friend and I learn dance every Monday.

My best friend and I take a dance class every Monday.

 

Interrogative – ask a question

She is happy. Is she happy?

 

Imperative- command

(You) Close the door. Implied subject

(You) come in.  Come in, please.

imply- mean something but you don’t say it
