You don’t have to copy all of these notes down. They will be there
after class for you to review. Everything that goes on this screen, I will put
up on our class blog.
· You do not have to make notes as we go. However, making notes
during class is an excellent way to improve retention. People who makes noted
during a class or lecture tend to have much better recall in the future. Jotting
down notes as you go is a great habit to get into.

· Students will learn the same material. I will mark the 11 students
a little harder than the 7/10 students.

· Ministry of Education rules:
· English Foundations 7 (EF7) is for Graduated Adults. A Graduated
Adult is a person who had finished high school anywhere in the world.
· -Composition and Literary Studies 10 (used to be called English 10)
is for people who have not finished high school anywhere in the world.
· did not finish high school in regular K-12
e.g. under 19, students who turned 19 and aged out of regular high
school in Vancouver, left school young for many reasons: family trouble; health
problems- physical, psychological- depression, anxiety, etc; war in their
country; political unrest; got a job to support their family; not allowed to go
or were not able to go to school when they young; too much partying
· Wide range of reasons why people don’t finish school.

No matter what the reason is, you are welcome here. I am really
glad you’re here.

· WRITING QUIZZES AND TESTS
You can write your quizzes, tests, and essays on paper or in a
word processor on computer. If you use a word processor, you must turn
spellcheck and grammar check off. If I see you are using spell check or grammar
check , you will not be allowed to submit quiizes and tests by computer anymore.
· Choice- paper or computer.
· All of the quizzes and tests will be during class time at school.
I do not do take-home tests, etc. If you need take-home tests, you can take a
self-paced class.
· You will have 20 minutes for a quiz, 55 minutes for a paragraph
test, and 1 1/2 hours for an essay.
· I don’t take late work, so you must pass-in or email your work to
me by the deadline, which will be during class time.
· If you need a lot of flexibility with your quizzes, tests, and
essay, you can take a self-paced class.
· If you miss a quiz or test, you can use the replacement quiz or
test to make it up.
· If you know you are going to miss a quiz or test, let me know a
couple of days beforehand. We can arrange another time for you to take the quiz
or test.
5-6 Quizzes X/6, 6 points
each – sentence work, 6 sentences
4-5 Tests X/6, 12 points each- paragraph writing
Essay(s) X/10, 20 points each- multi-paragraph writing
Spoken X/10, 10 points- daily spoken contributions to class
life
Final mark is average of all of
those.
