Pen

Margins

Doublespace

Indent

It’s easy to forget these details when you are focussed on writing.

I will keep reminding you.

When the formatting is right, it looks better.

We’ll practice today.

On a word processor on computer:

-Use a 14-16 point font

-Choose an attractive font- simple and clear

e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri

-Doublespace or 1.5 spacing

-Indent the first word of each paragraph, TAB key or 4-5 space bar

-Save your document with a meaningful name  Name, Class, Quiz#

-Email the document to me as an attachment

I will mark it and make comments on it using Word. Then I can send it back to you.

Googledocs -SHARING DOESN’T WORK WELL

You can attach the Googledoc; however, there are a couple of extra steps.

HOMEWORK: Send me a document by 3PM. We can see it all works ok.

Text – Hi.

I will comment on it. Then I will send it back to you.

If you are able to read my comment, great!

If not, we can figure out how to make it work.

Spelling-

American spelling and Canadian spelling differ sometimes.

In media, American spelling dominates.

focused focussed

meter metre

center centre   Collingwood Community Centre

neighbor neighbour

color colour

airplane(Can,US) aeroplane(UK)  tire(Can,US) tyre(UK)

dilemma(Can,US) dilemna(UK-regional)

Canadian spelling is closer to British spelling.

Multiplicity of Englishes

code-switching- using different vocab, pronunciation depending on who you are talking to, US Black and White

You can choose what you want- try to be consistent.

The colour of my neighbor’s house is green. – inconsistent

The colour of my neighbour’s house is green.- consistent

Choose one spelling system. It is your choice.

I recommend you go with Canadian spelling.

spellcheck – see errors, not errors

NOTE: Grammarchecker is highly inaccurate.

My grammarchecker gives all kinds of dumb advice to me.

Grammarchecker is a crutch. Be cautious is relying on it.

I leave it turned off.

Some people like Grammarly. Some people find it helpful. However, it is a huge crutch. Be cautious of relying on it too much. it is generated by AI (Artificial Intelligence), so your writing will sound like AI- impersonal, bland, no personality, plain glass of water, no flavour.

The resulting writing will not sound like you.

Don’t use it in class. I want to see your writing. I want to hear your voice, not a computer version of your voice.

Time to take off the training wheels.

Have some confidence. Fall down- get back up.

Group of two:

Find someone in class who speaks a different language than you do.

Chat with your partner about the following topics:

1.    Name

2.    Home

3.    Family

4.    Job

5.    Travel

6.    Hobbies

7.    Future plans

Make notes about the other person’s answers so that you will remember.

PASS-IN WRITING

Write a paragraph (150-200 words) introducing your partner. Pass it in to me by 12.
