Good morning, everyone.

Today’s agenda

·      Five-paragraph essay, whole class, lots of time

I will mark all the essay and finish all of your final grades/reports. I won’t be able to give feedback or put comments on the essay. I will read them and put a mark on them. If you want feedback on the essay, I’d be happy to do that. Hit me up in the summer. Find me and ask for your essay. I will give it to you the day in school.

·      NO TEACHING, NO INSTRUCTION

·      Marks day, final reports

If you are here, we can talk about how the term for you. If not, send me an email and I will send you your final mark back. ahaley@vsb.bc.ca

Deadline: Wednesday, 1PM.

I will be teaching Eng10/EF7/Eng 11 at 8:30-12.

5-paragraph essays typically consist of an introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. For example, if someone was writing a 5 paragraph essay on why basketball is the best sport ever, their essay structure might look like this:

Introductory paragraph

Body paragraph 1- Reason 1

Body paragraph 2- Reason 2

Body paragraph 3- Reason 3

Concluding paragraph

The introductory paragraph should give a preview of what’s to come without giving it away. Each body paragraph should have supporting information, such as stories, facts, statistics, and more. The concluding paragraph should summarize the key points.

This is like following a recipe. I think about writing like cooking. A beginner writer has to follow a recipe very closely. When you get some experience cooking, you don’t need the recipe book anymore.

When you get comfortable writing essay after 3-4 tries, then you can follow your own style.

The style that I am teaching is very basic and clear. It is simple and ‘easy’ to do. You can get fancier with your essays later.

There are lots of different kinds of essays.

Plan first!

Then write.

1.PREWRITING – planning your essay, making a little plan to organize what you want to say in each paragraph in your essay

2.WRITING- actually writing the sentences and paragraphs

Essay#1

Write an organized five-paragraph or multi-paragraph essay of 300-350 words on ONE of the following topics.

CHOOSE ONE:

1.    What You Would Do if You Won the Lottery?

2.    Legalized Doctor-Assisted Suicide

3.    Overcoming a Difficult Time in Your Life

4.    What are the secrets of a happy life?

FREE ADVICE:      Organize your ideas before you write.

Be specific.

Write good sentences.
