Test #3- 150-200 word paragraph

I hope this is becoming routine for you. This paragraph writing hopefully is becoming boring, comfortable, everyday work.

FORMAT

-         One block of writing

-         Double-spaced

-         Pen

-         Indent

CONTENT

-         Begin with a grabber (7 ways to choose from)

-         Good clear topic sentence that addresses the writing prompt (question) directly. There must be no confusion about what you are writing about. PRO TIP: Use words from the writing prompt, or use synonyms.

-         3-4 supporting ideas written into sentences

          Balance the supporting ideas

          e.g     Supporting point #1

                     subpoint

subpoint

Supporting point #2

                     subpoint

subpoint

Supporting point #3

                     subpoint

subpoint

Really clearly organized. The reader should be able to follow easily.

Avoid disorganization of the ideas.

ESSENTIAL: Make a plan before you start to write. Avoid writing of the top of your head. It often comes out in a jumble. Making a plan will give you a structure to follow; it will also stimulate vocabulary.

**

1.       Introductory paragraph – usually one paragraph, introduces the topic, thesis, and main points of the essay

2.       Body paragraphs– usually several paragraphs- 2,3,4,5 paragraphs (3 is the magic number for a standard five-paragraph), discussion, explanation, description of the main points of the essay

Essay writing is a balance of giving information and repeating information.

*Essay is all about giving and restating information*

REASSURANCE: With practice, this will become routine. After you’ve written 10 essays, you will be able to do it in your sleep.

A teacher will give reasonable topics in class.

“Explain how modern nuclear power plants are safer than those built a generation ago.” Unreasonable topic

“Why did you choose to live in BC?” Reasonable topic. EF6 level

“Explain why the US went off the Gold Standard in 1971.” Unreasonable topic

“How to Be a Good Friend.” Reasonable topic

As you move to higher coursework, more specified levels of education, your essay topics will become more specialized.

CHALLENGE IN ESSAY WRITING: Vocabulary, depth of vocabulary

Build vocabulary! It is good to have five or six synonyms for common words.

I am teaching the most basic kind of essay.

It is basic but really effective.

This is like following a recipe.

When you get comfortable writing essays after 3-4. 6-7 tries, then you can get more creative and follow your own style. You can choose the format that will work best for your subject matter.

The style that I am teaching is very basic and clear. It is simple and ‘easy’ to do. You can get fancier with your essays later.

There are lots of different kinds of essays.

I think about writing like cooking. A beginner writer has to follow a recipe very closely. When you get some experience cooking, you don’t need the recipe book anymore.

Plan first!

Then write.

You have to make a plan before you write.

An essay has to be organized.

If the essay is disorganized, I’m not going to take time to figure it out.

Essay – five paragraphs, expand the paragraph to five paragraphs

There are 10 wonderful provinces and three territories that you can choose to live in in Canada. Each has its own attractions. You could make a great life in any of them. However, in my opinion, BC is special and stands out from the rest of them. I moved to BC because of everything that this province has to offer. Namely, BC has many job opportunities, access to wonderful nature, and rich multicultural experiences.

First of all, there were work opportunities for me here, much more than in my home province. I wanted to go to grad school, and UBC offered me work as a teaching assistant. After I graduated, I was able to find work as a teacher quite easily. In my home province, there were very few opportunities for good jobs. Blah blah blah

Secondly, I love being around nature, and BC has lots of lots of forest, ocean, and mountains to enjoy. You can go hiking in the Northshore Mountains. There are lots of parks to go camping. Also, blah blah blah

Finally, I like the multicultural, multi-ethnic makeup of the province, such as restaurants, festivals, and stores. When you walk down the street, you hear a dozen languages being spoken. blah blah blah

In essence, BC is my chosen home because it offers so much. BC has a lot of chances to get good meaningful employment. Also, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth in terms of nature. Finally, BC has a rich tapestry of ethnicities, languages, and cultures. BC is the place for me.

An essay gives you some room to breathe. Make sure you have a plan before you begin to write.
