sentences – will review, E11 is not the course for learning basic sentences, my expectation – you know how to write already

MY NOTES ARE NOT SENTENCES. I AM MAKING NOTES FOR YOU.

Literary Studies 11 – focused on short story, poetry, novel

Composition 11 – writing skills

In my class, I put them together. I will be doing both.

Literacy / Literature – not the same thing

literacy – ability to communicate in a language, “ability to read and write” (OED- Oxford English Dictionary)

literature – fiction writing, novels, short stories, “written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit” (OED)

-my class- I will teach both- writing, literature

If this is to your liking, let’s go!

I guarantee you will learn a lot about writing and literature in English.

Quizzes every few days, short, 15-20m, sentence writing, grammar point (Worth 3pts each)

-approximately eight quizzes 24pts

Tests every 4-5 days, longer, 35-45m, paragraph (150w) about a topic we have been working on in class (Worth 7pts each)

- approx. six tests 42pts

Essays, approx. 3-5 essays, 1 ½ hr, essay (300-350w) about a topic we have been working on in class (Worth 10pts each)

- 4 essays 40pts

The writing should be at least 150 words for a paragraph and at least 300 words for an essay. Longer is not necessarily better. You don’t have to write a book. Better to have a piece of writing that is shorter and high quality than longer and poor quality.

Presentations – How can we do that on Zoom?

Marks

Quizzes – approx. 25pts

Tests -      approx. 42 pts

Essays-     approx. 40pts

approx 100

fraction – e.g. 85/110 - 77.3%, 68/130 – 52%

Pass mark for BC is 50%.

My opinion: less than 65%- don’t try the next level

Each class is different, more quizzes, fewer tests, vice versa

I sent the course outline to you. If you didn’t get it, let me know.

Plagiarism – copying from the internet or a book and passing it in

copied from the internet

The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.

Bad news: I will give you a 0%. I will write a letter to go in your school file. If it happens again, I will ask you to leave my class.

Good news: I will teach you how to borrow text from other sources using “ “ and citations.

I don’t want you to get into trouble. I will show how to avoid trouble.

Email protocols:

1.   Subject line: Full name, Class, Time, Topic

e.g. Sarah Wong, Eng 11, 8:30, Quiz 1

Not good email for work or school:

fancypants@gmail.com

catlovergirl@hotmail.com

Free advice #2: Get an email that sounds professional

Gmail has free email

“I am using my aunt’s email address.” Please, can you get your own.

2.   Attach the quiz, test, essay.

MSWord docs are best. I edit and mark using MSWord.

A txt attachment should be fine.

If you don’t know what that means, we can sort it out together in the next day or so.

HOMEWORK:

Please send me a short bio of yourself (approx. 150w)

Bio – e.g. name, home, family, job, hobbies, future plans

Remember to include a Subject line.

Please attach the bio to your email.

Please email that to me by 10:30.

This is not for marks. This is for you to try the email protocols.
