Main lesson for today:
Review of sentences:
sentence writing: good
sentences, top priority, so important that we can write excellent sentences,
consistently, reliably, for me - basis of my life- school, college, university,
personal life, business life, professionally, career, teaching
based on good writing –
sentences!!!
Three kinds of sentences – have
to master, know them inside and out
SIMPLE SENTENCES – most basic
kind of sentence
one independent (main) clause
– subject and verb, has a meaning by itself, complete meaning
SV It is sunny and warm today. S+V
SSV Vancouver and Victoria
are nice cities to visit in the summer.
SVV The kids play basketball and run laps in the park.
SSSV My sister, my
daughter, and I all like to read.
S + V – SIMPLE
imperative sentence – command
sentence, tell someone to do something
(You) Go to bed. -we don’t say ‘you’, implied, implied subject
Close the door. no ‘you’ You close the door. – sounds rude and
aggressive
here/there
Here is my house. SV ‘here’ is not the subject
There are your keys.
Feel free to write an example
in the Chat box to share. Try one to share.
Your examples:
1.
My mother is a
wonderful person.

Hunting is the
teacher’s hobby. capital letter H

live Here is where I live. cap, punc
13.
Here comes the
bus.
COMPOUND SENTENCES – two main
clauses put together
SV + SV
My mother is a wonderful
person. My father is a terrible man. 2 SIMPLES
put these together into a
compound sentence
FANBOYS 7 coordinating conjunctions
for and nor but or yet so – not good
advice, not all are commonly used
for not used for compound sentences by English speakers,
formal-sounding, stodgy
She is wearing sunglasses,
for it is bright outside. UNUSUAL
She is wearing sunglasses because
it is bright outside. COMPLEX SENT
I have a gift for you. Okay.
simple sentence, very common, different usage of ‘for’
nor
She does not speak French, nor
does she speak German. very unusual, not authentic sounding
She doesn’t speak French or German.
authentic
She does not speak French nor
German. Grammatically it is fine. Sounds old-fashioned, stodgy
You have to decide how you
want to sound in English – casual, very formal, like a dictionary, like a
grammar book?
I will teach you a level that
is good for everyday and also for school and business.
yet
It is September 10th,
yet it is still hot in the days.
It is September 10th,
but it is still hot in the days. sounds more authentic
Even though it is September 10th,
it is still hot in the days. COMPLEX SENTENCE
FANBOYS – so or but and –
most useful
SOBA- so or but and
