ADVERB CLAUSES- adverbs describe or modify verbs

adverb – often ‘ly’ word quickly, slowly

                  SIMPLE SENTENCES

                  The puppy eats very quickly.

                  She read the story slowly and carefully.

                  well

                  Sarah speaks English very well.

                  Dave does not dance very well.

 

convey more complicated ideas – because, after, before, since, until, when, if, whenever, while, even if, provided that, unless, though/although/even though, as, so that, so…that, than, as…as

 

- because – reason

The cat is hissing because there is a dog in the yard. adverb clause no comma

Because there is a dog in the yard, the cat is hissing. comma

 

- after, before – time

The kids played video games after supper. SIMPLE

The kids played video games after S V supper. The kids played video games after they finished supper. adverb clause

See the difference?

The kids played video games after they finished supper.

After they the kids finished supper, the kids they played video games.

The kids finished their supper before they played video games.

 

-since – 2 meanings: reason, time

Beverly is wearing a sweater since it is chilly today. reason

Beverly has been homesick since she moved to Canada. time

Since Beverley moved to Canada, she has been homesick.

 

FREE ADVICE #5 – Don’t begin your sentences with long adverb clauses. It makes it uncomfortable for the reader.

Because Vancouver is a very expensive city with high housing costs and steep rent as well as high taxes, I have to get a second job. poor writing style, grammatically fine, RW -

Writing style is personal and cultural. Long adverb clauses – Spanish writing.

 

- until -time, waiting for a time

We won’t have dinner until you get home.

 

- when – time

Call me when you get to Calgary.

When you have a minute, could you read my letter?

 

-if – possibility, condition

If you want to go hiking with me, you should get some good hiking boots.

 

- whenever – every time

The dog goes crazy whenever the telephone rings.

Whenever the little girl feels sad, she talks to her dolls.

 

- while – two things happening at the same time

The kids were talking while the teacher was teaching.

Could you chop up some onions and garlic while I peel these potatoes?

 

- even if – doesn’t matter, won’t change the situation

I won’t let you borrow my bicycle even if you ask nicely.

Even if you flap your arms and run as fast as you can, you will never be able to fly.

 

- provided that – ‘if’ for important things

You should marry him provided that you truly love him.

Let’s go grab a coffee provided that if you have time. XXX

You can get a mortgage to buy a house provided that you have sufficient income.

providing – different usage

NOUN CLAUSES- whether or not –

I need to know whether or not you are coming to my party.

I need to know whether you are coming to my party or not.

 

- unless – opposite of ‘if’

We will go for a hike on Saturday if it is sunny.

We will go for a hike on Saturday unless it rains.

 

- though(casual)/although/even though

Dan is wearing shorts even though it is snowing.

 

- as – because, reason

Sarah does not want to come camping with us as she is afraid of trees, and bears, and bears hiding in trees.

 

- so that - reason

I am saving money so that I can buy a new guitar.

‘so that’ easily confused with ‘, so’

I want to buy a new guitar, so I am saving money. COMPOUND

so that     , so  NOT THE SAME

 

- so…that

so ADJ that

The girl is so tall that she is always picked for the basketball team.

The littlw kid was so tired that he fell asleep at the kitchen table.

Math 12 is so hard that I’m not sure I can do it.

Her boyfriend is so stupid that he forgot their one-month anniversary.

 

- than – comparison

The dog is smaller than the cat (is).

Vancouver is more beautiful than Calgary (is).

I am better than my sister.

Sometimes cycling is faster than taking a car.

 

- as…as – comparison , two things the same

My son is as tall as I am.

Vancouver is not as expensive as Hong Kong.

Your dog is as cute as my dog.

 

 

For homework, try a few examples of you own.

Try some new words, not just the words you already know. Challenge yourself.
