EF45 Class 5 simple sentences

Paragraph format

1.    Use lined ruled paper

ruled- with red margins

2.    Write in pen

3.    Doublespace

4.    Write between the margins

5.    Name and class in top right corner

6.    Indent the first word of a paragraph – ~2 cm, five spaces, TAB key

 

We will write our first paragraph later this week. This will be Test#1.

All of our tests will be paragraphs. I will give you a straightforward topic.

 

 

* COMPOUND SENTENCE – two independent clauses together, two simple sentences put together

 

Mei likes ice cream. Joe likes cake. 2 simple sentences

 

Join them together: FANBOYS 

7 words (GRAMMAR TERM- coordinating conjunctions) that we use for compound sentences:

, for , and , nor , but , or , yet , so

FANBOYS – easy to remember

 

MY OPINION: FANBOYS is not very useful.

 

Some of the FANBOYS word are not used very much for compound sentences.

We seldom use  for   nor   yet   Very unusual to use these words

We are going for a hike tomorrow, for it will be a nice day. UNUSUAL

We are going for a hike tomorrow because it will be a nice day.  COMMON, AUTHENTIC ENGLISH, REAL, NATURAL-SOUNDING

‘for’ not often used in compound sentences

‘for’ in simple sentences are commonly used-  I have a gift for you.

 

The most useful words for compound sentences are these:

, so   , or   , but   , and  (98% of the time)

SOBA   , so   , or   , but   , and

SOBA – more useful than FANBOYS, more authentic

How to make a compound sentence

 

Mei likes ice cream. Joe likes cake. 2 SIMPLES

Mei likes ice cream, but Joe likes cake. COMPOUND shows difference

Mei likes ice cream, and Joe likes cake. COMPOUND shows extra information

Canada offers many human rights, but my country does not.

 

 

 Other ways to make compound sentences: EF56 (maybe in this class, too)

We’ll do a few of them.

e.g. Canada offers many human rights; however, my country does not.

It’s raining today; therefore, the picnic has been postponed.

VOCAB postpone(v) – rescheduled

 

* COMPLEX SENTENCE

 

1.adverb clauses – because  when  if  since (I will teach you 10-15.)

Shirin is drinking coffee because she is tired.

Because she is tired, Shirin is drinking coffee.

*Some teachers will tell you to not start a sentence with ‘because’. You can smile and say ‘Thank you.’ It is ok to begin a sentence with ‘because’.

Your choice.

 

Joan isn’t going to play volleyball tonight because it is going to rain.

Because it is going to rain, Joan isn’t going to play volleyball tonight.

 

2.noun clauses –

brain- think, feel, know, believe, remember, forget, learn

tongue- say, yell, whisper, remind

that why how

 

e.g

Junko said that she would be late today.

You said that this is our classroom.

Mel thinks that she can make some food for the party.

We don’t know why our boss is in a bad mood today.

Shirin forgot that she had a doctor’s appointment today. It slipped her mind.

IDIOM slip your mind  – you forget

Sorry, I forgot to pick up my son at school. It slipped my mind. I was 30 minutes late.

 

IDIOM empty your mind, let your mind go blank- meditate

 

IDIOM get into the zone, get your head into the game- clear your mind of all of your thoughts, focus on the task you want to achieve

 

 

Nasrin is learning how to drive.  

We just learned how to make noun clauses.

 

 

3. adjective clauses – who that which

Jen’s neighbours who are very noisy often have arguments late at night.

Mariam has a puppy that has white paws and black ears. complex

Mariam’s puppy has white paws and black ears. simple

 

I have a pen that has red ink.

I have a pen which my grandmother gave me.

He is a runner who has prosthetic legs.

prosthetic- artificial leg or arm or body part

Terry Fox- famous Canadian, ran partially across Canada on one leg

which- special things, unique things

 

whom - very formal, not often used

 

 

FOCUS OF THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF THIS COURSE:

I want to teach you how to write sentences in these three styles.

It is really important to learn these sentence styles.

These styles are the foundation of all writing in English.

These are the sentences styles what you will need for school, university, college, work, business, life in Canada.

If When you learn them, your writing will be really good.

MY ADVICE: Learn the sentence styles now. Don’t wait until English 10, 11 ,12 to learn how to write sentences. The time is now!

 

You can do it!

It’s hard, but you can do it.

Practice, practice, practice!

 

Do you have something you practice everyday?

Mastery comes from steady daily practice.

 

Do you have a goal?

It will take steady daily work.

Write clear goals and do steady work.

You will be amazed at what you can accomplish in six months or a year if you work at it every day.

persistence, perseverance – keep working, don’t quit

Pursue your goals. Chase after your goals.

 

 

Three kinds of sentences:

1.    SIMPLE

2.    COMPOUND

3.    COMPLEX

 

Simple Sentence

A simple sentence -a subject and a verb

-expresses a complete thought.

 

Different types of simple sentences:

SV – 1 subject + 1 verb

SSV- 2 subjects + 1 verb

SVV- 1 subject + 2 verbs

Imperative (command)- tell someone to do something

Interrogative (question)- ask someone a question

 

* SV – 1 subject + 1 verb

Your friend is beautiful/handsome/funny.

Sarah does her homework at night.

Your brother works in construction.

 

REMEMBER:

Begin with a capital letter.

End with a period.

 

Don’t write in all capital letters. The only capital letters should be the first letter of the first word in a sentence and the first letter of proper nouns.

‘we’ plural- more than one, two or a thousand

 

proper nouns- caps

names of cities, days, months, countries, languages, people’s names, first person pronoun “I”, companies, landmarks

*SVV- 1 subject + 2 verbs

My husband cooks and washes the dishes everyday.

I clean the bathroom and do the laundry.

Mei drives her car to school and studies English five days a week.

Sarah likes swimming but hates biking.

Examples of simple sentences:

You are a teacher and a mother. SV

Mohammad likes dogs but does not have a dog right now. SVV

Shira bought a new phone and sold her old one. SVV

Manuel is from Mexico but lives in Canada. SVV

 

** Thinking about SV helps to structure your sentence.

When I write for school or work, I always have SV in my mind.

SV = Subject Verb

 

PRACTICE:

Take put a piece of paper. Write some SV, SSV, and SVV simple sentences from your own imagination. Please work together if you wish.

My son likes to swim / swimming.

likes + infinitive / gerund

She likes to hike / hiking.

SSV   I and my daughters had fun yesterday in the park. wo

My daughters and I had fun yesterday in the park.

 

SSVV   The car and the truck hit and were broken. ww

The car and the truck crashed into each other and were damaged.

The car and the truck collided and were damaged.

IDIOM fender bender- small car accident, just dents, nobody hurt

Joe got into a fender bender last night.

 

IDIOM car is totalled - major accident, car cannot be fixed

Mary’s car was totalled when she went off the highway. She was ok.

GUIDELINE FOR WRITING NUMBERS

1-9 write it out “one two three four”

10+ use numerals 12 47 135

 

SV My friend learning English. vf

My friend is learning English.

 

My neighbour goes to Burnaby.

My neighbour goes to school.

go to ABC

My neighbour goes to the park.

 

EXCEPTIONS- home downtown

My neighbour goes to home. -your own home

My neighbour goes to downtown.

My neighbour goes to her mother’s home on Sundays.

 

My friend goes GERUND.

gerund – noun ‘ing’

My friend goes to shopping.

My friend goes swimming every day.

My friend goes walking.

My friend goes paddling / canoeing / kayaking / sailing.

He goes surfing at Long Beach / Tofino.

 

SV Lucas likes dogs and cats.

SV I like singing and dancing. gerunds(nouns)

 

LITTLE BIT TRICKY

‘ing’ word  - verb or a noun

two different usages

-‘walking’(verb)

Monica is walking down the street. verb

Ahmed is walking on the beach/in the forest.

 

-‘walking’(noun)

Walking is good exercise. noun gerund

Walking is beneficial to elderly people.

I like walking my dog in the woods. noun gerund

I like ice cream.

She likes talking to her sister.
