EXAMPLES:

Voice – active   passive

active voice – the subject does the verb, the subject is doing the action

The dog ate the steak.

passive voice – the subject does nothing, the subject does not do the action

The steak was eaten by the dog.

She was born in Vancouver in 1998.

Many countries’ people live in Vancouver. phrasing, awk

People from many countries live in Vancouver.

 

I don’t like other countries’ food very much.

I don’t like (other) food from other countries very much.

 

I lived with my family and played with my school friends. vt

Don’t start sentences with SOBA- too casual for school writing

Compound sentences

SV, SOBA SV.

 

 

 

 

 

1.    Sarah went to the grocery store, and she bought some milk and bread. some water – noncount nouns,uncountable nouns

She bought four litres of milk.

She bought a four-litre jug of milk.

 

2.    Tom likes to swim, but he doesn't like to dive. He jumped in head first. He jumped in feet first.

 

IDIOM jump in head first- to try something new without thinking too much first

Jose started a new business last year. He did nto have any business experience. He just jumped in head first.

 

3.    I have a test tomorrow, so I need to study tonight.

4.    The concert was canceled. It was raining heavily.

It was raining heavily, so the concert was canceled.

 

5.    She wants to travel to Europe, so/and/but she needs to save more money.

6.    He loves playing/ to play basketball, but he doesn't enjoy watching it.

 

DIFFERENT VERB USAGE

He likes to watch basketball. He likes watching basketball.

He enjoys watching basketball.

 

Exercise 2

Add an independent clause with proper punctuation to create a compound sentence for each.

1.    My dog barked, so the cat ran away.

I couldn’t catch the cat, and it ran away.

The dog came into the yard, so the cat ran away.
