*The writer chose to not start with a grabber. Starting with a grabber is a good idea.

Possible grabbers: ask a question, short anecdote, fact or statistic, history, etc.

**

An essay has three sections

**

Introduction – usually one paragraph, introduces the topic, thesis, and                       main points of the essay

Body – usually several paragraphs- 2,3,4,5 paragraphs (3 is the number

for this class), discuss, explain, describe the main points of the essay

Conclusion- usually one paragraph, restates the topic, thesis and main points, restatement of the introduction

Length -300-350 words, not long, short compact paragraphs, twice as long as one paragraph, not a book

English 12 – paragraph – “at least 150 words”

                     - essay – 5 paragraphs X 150=750 words, “at least 300 words”

Teach “The Bare Bones of a Five-Paragraph Academic Essay”

Five-paragraph essay – most basic form, 3X5 essay, academic essay, go-to model for essays, IKEA essay

PARAGRAPH       begin with a grabber (optional)

topic sentence

ESSAY         Introductory paragraph – expands on the paragraph,

-         expands the grabber and TS into s short paragraph

-         Thesis statement, thesis (idea)

3 Body paragraphs       - supporting points, each one will get a

short paragraph

                     Concluding paragraph-

It is not necessary to write a concluding sentence for each body paragraph. You are already stating the points in the Introductory paragraph, the Body paragraphs, and the Concluding paragraph.

Essay writing is a balance of giving information and repeating information.

*Essay is all about giving and restating information*

REASSURANCE: With practice, this will become routine. After you’ve written 10 essays, you will be able to do it in your sleep.

A teacher will give reasonable topics in class.

“Explain how modern nuclear power plants are safer than those built a generation ago.” Unreasonable topic

“Why did you choose to live in BC?” Reasonable topic. EF6 level

“Explain why the US went off the Gold Standard in 1971.” Unreasonable topic

“How to Be a Good Friend.” Reasonable topic

As you move to higher coursework, more specified levels of education, your essay topics will become more specialized.

CHALLENGE IN ESSAY WRITING: Vocabulary, depth of vocabulary

Build vocabulary! It is good to have five or six synonyms for common words.

TEACH “The Benefits of Cycling”

How does it look on the page?

-five paragraphs

-paragraphs balanced in length

-introductory and concluding paragraphs are a bit shorter, OK

Different modes of writing, writing for different purposes, different intentions

“The Benefits of Cycling”- PERSUASIVE MODE

“How to Pass a Course at the Top of the Class”- EXPOSITORY, PROCESS MODE (teach)

DESCRIPTIVE MODE

NARRATIVE MODE

I am teaching the most basic kind of essay.

It is basic but really effective.

This is like following a recipe.

When you get comfortable writing essays after 3-4. 6-7 tries, then you can get more creative and follow your own style.

The style that I am teaching is very basic and clear. It is simple and ‘easy’ to do. You can get fancier with your essays later.

There are lots of different kinds of essays.

I think about writing like cooking. A beginner writer has to follow a recipe very closely. When you get some experience cooking, you don’t need the recipe book anymore.

Plan first!

Then write.

You have to make a plan before you write.

An essay has to be organized.

If the essay is disorganized, I’m not going to take time to figure it out.
