Notice regarding registration for Summer Term 2020
Our Adult Education Summer Term registration will begin on Wednesday, June 3.
Please DO NOT come to the Centre to register.  Registration will happen remotely through your Academic Advisor.  
At this time, we will be registering for Summer Term only.  Information on September will be published later in June.

Our Summer Term will run from Thursday, July 2 to Wednesday August 5.
In order to register, all students will need to contact an Advisor to register and to renew their Intake Form and Student Learning Plan

For students in English Foundations 3/4 (11 am Haley course) please contact Joanne (email: jamcleod@vsb.bc.ca).
In your email to the Advisor please make sure to include
your full name  (Last, Usual)
your PEN (personal education number) or Date of Birth
the course(s) you are currently completing – include the time of the class and the name of your Instructor
the course you wish to register for in Summer term.
Please note that failure to provide accurate information could result in delays

If you are currently registered in two courses and are directed to contact two different Academic Advisors, you may choose which Advisor you wish to contact.
Please be patient as our Advisors will be experiencing higher than normal volumes of emails during our registration period.

I will give you recommendations for summer on Friday. You should know how you are doing. If your tests have been 4/6 and 5/6, then you are good for the next level. If your tests have been 2/6 and 3/6, then you should stay at this level.

Do you want to go to the next level in the summer? You may want to stay at this level since summer is such a short course.


Adjective clauses:
who – people
that – things, sometimes people (doesn’t sound respectful)
which – special things, unique (only one) things

I bought a potato which that was very expensive.
Is the potato special?
I bought a diamond ring for my wife which was very expensive.
Is the ring expensive?

You have to judge it. You decide.

Which one do you want? QUESTION simple sentence, a different usage of the word ‘which’

adj cl “Her three-year-old son drew a beautiful picture which she put on the refrigerator.”
Was the picture special? Yes.

“Her three-year-old son found a stick that was covered in mud in the park.”
Was the stick special? No.

which  - unique, only one

Vancouver which is the largest city in BC is beautiful.
Vancouver is unique; there is only one.

Vancouver, which is the largest city in BC, is beautiful.
The commas show that it is very special or unique.
You do not have to know about these commas in EF34.
I teach in EF56 and English 10,11,12.
This is a sneak peak. Don’t worry about it.

I got invited to a restaurant which/that is on Main Street.
Is ‘restaurant’ special? No.

I got invited to my friend’s restaurant which/that is on Main Street.
I got invited to a famous restaurant which/that is on Main Street.

The paragraph which/that I sent you was beautiful. 
Is ‘paragraph’ special? No.
The poem/love letter/ painting which/that I sent you was beautiful. 
“Which’ might be a better choice.

Which paragraph did I send you? question, simple sentence

‘Which’ has a few different usages in English.

The story which I wrote about my life is very personal to me. COMPLEX – adjective clause

Is ‘story’ special. Yes.

I saw the rainbow which was in the sky.
The rainbow was special to you.

comma – complicated, hard to explain easily , EF6
commas or no commas – detail, not very important

Victoria, which is the capital of BC, is on Vancouver Island.
Everybody knows what Victoria is.  ,    , extra information, so commas

I come from a small town that is in Nova Scotia.
necessary information, so no commas

I don’t want to go into any more detail about commas and adjective clause. I will teach you about that in EF6.
