See you at 1:30

Good afternoon.

Today’s agenda:
1. Summer school – Intake form
Tomorrow, I will meet with everyone one-on-one to discuss your work so fa, and to decide what you would like to do in the summer.
Last names beginning A-M we will meet individually in Zoom from 1:30-2:00
Last names beginning N-Z we will meet individually in Zoom from 2:00-2:30

2. Summer school – I will be teaching EF5/6, 8:30-12:00.
Probably we will meet online for 90 minutes.
The grammar and sentence work will mostly be the same.
The stories will be different.
Therefore, if you would prefer to wait until September to do a tougher class like English 10 in just five weeks, the summer EF5/6 would be a good review so you don’t forget everything.
I do not know what I will be teaching in September.
As soon as I know, I will put it on the blog.
English Foundations 7 = English 10
violin = fiddle
Idiom: Six of one, half dozen of the other.
You have to say this stuff out loud a hundred times, or you will forget it in three days.
It goes from short-term memory into long-term memory.
We don’t our new English to be just in our short-term memory. We want it in our long-term memory.
FREE ADVICE #6: The secret of learning something new is careful repetition.

3. Continue with adjective clauses – prepositions
4. Rosa Parks
https://www.biography.com/activist/rosa-parks

We will write a paragraph about Rosa Parks on Friday. You can try out your new knowledge of topic sentences.

Review Adjective clauses
who - people
that - things
which – special things, unique things

where – place
The city that she was born in is very far away.
The city where she was born is very far away.

where S V no prep
The place that I live in is nice.
The place where I live is nice.

The school where I teach is on Fraser Street.
The school that I teach at is on Fraser Street.

If you are interested in learning more about ‘where’ in adjective clauses, please look it up.

TWO STYLES OF WRITING ADJ CL:

I was talking to the girl who lives next door.
who lives next door  ‘who’ is a subject pronoun

The girl who I was talking to lives next door.
who I was talking to ‘who’ is an object pronoun

who I was talking to

The girl I was talking to lives next door.
Very natural authentic-sounding English to omit the ‘who’.

My dog who is asleep on the couch is very friendly.
‘who’ is a subject pronoun – leave it alone

The dog that I play with is very friendly.
‘that’ is an object pronoun – can omit it
The dog that I play with is very friendly.
The dog I play with is very friendly.

Maybe this is too hard for you right now. It might be something you come back to in the future.

Exercises:
Expand each simple sentence with an adjective clause. Try all the different styles that we have been learning. Mix it up.
1. The cat stretched.
2. Jacob stood on his tiptoes.
3. The car turned the corner.
4. Kelly twirled in circles.
5. She opened the door.
She opened the door that was locked.
She opened the door that I had locked.
She opened the door I had locked.
6. Aaron drew a picture.
7. The little kid was very happy.
8. We were dancing to music.
9. Sarah baked a cake.
10. I took a class.

She who is my sister opened the door. XXX
‘she’ pronoun, doesn’tnormally go with adj cl.
noun + adj cl
Sheila who is my sister opened the door.

Sheila who is my sister who is older than me opened the door that I locked. 3 adj cl- No problem.
Sheila who is my sister and is older than me opened the door that I locked. 2 adj cl
Sheila who is my sister is older than me opened the door that I locked. XXX   No subject for ‘opened’

Sheila who is my sister is older than me. She opened the door that I locked.

Every subject needs a verb. Every verb needs a subject

We will keep working on this. You will get it, but you may not it all today. It might a few days. I will keep teaching and referring back to these sentence styles for the rest of the course.

6. Quiz in adjective clauses
7. Homework

Our picture today is from Newfoundland.

Adjective clauses
who - person
that - thing
which - special thing, unique thing

adjective clauses = S+V

A sentence with an adjective clause has two parts, two clauses.

who
-The young woman is running in the park.
-She is wearing a ballcap.
-The young woman is running in the park.
who is wearing a ballcap

-The young woman who is wearing a ballcap
is running in the park.

-The young woman who is running in the park.
-She The young woman is wearing a ballcap.

The young woman who is running in the park
is wearing a ballcap.

You can write these sentences in two way, at least.

My dog who is asleep likes to play.
My dog who likes to play is asleep.
Your choice.
The only difference is the adj cl is less important.

My daughter who is at school does her homework.
My daughter who does her homework is at school.
Your choice.
Style, not grammar. You decide how you want to construct your sentences, especially in the future when you become even better writers.

Your examples:
1. My son who is running in the park V.
My son who is running in the park likes to stay fit.
2. Mala who is my cousin can play basketball.
3. Sara who is cooking is at home.
4. Karol who is my class mate at university bought a new car.

Good morning.

Today’s agenda:
1. Summer school
2. Format of a paragraph
3. “Family”
4. Homework

We’ll get started at 11.

Our picture of the day is of Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick.

Summer school will be held online. Registration will begin next week probably. I don’t know the detail yet, but the information will be coming very soon, maybe even today.

I will give everyone a recommendation early next week. I will probably do that by Zoom. I want to talk with every student one-on-one and discuss what you should take in the summer, if you are going to take a class in the summer.
Maybe I will divide the class into two groups and set a time for the first half and second half of the class. 11:00-11:30 and then 11:30-12:00.
I don’t know what I’m teaching in the summer. As soon as I know, I will tell you.
We should keep studying because English disappears like ice melting on a warm day.

Paragraphs – format of a paragraph
format – layout, how the paragraph looks on the page

1. Doublespace.
2. Indent the first word of the first sentence of the paragraph. Use the TAB key.
3. The sentences will follow each other so that the paragraph looks like a block of writing.

In a  short Story, “Roses Sing on New Snow”, Maylin argued with governor  and his men boldly because governor  want  to take her hand made dish to china . But she stated that you can not take the dish to China which made the Governor angry. He asked Maylin how dare she can stop him to take this delicious dish to China. In addition to that conversation, Maylin said that this is a dish of the New World, therefore you cannot recreate it in the Old.

it is important for you to send your work as an attachment so that I correct it and give suggestions.

Good afternoon.

Today’s agenda:
1. Format of a paragraph
2. Structure of a paragraph
3. Process for writing a paragraph
4. Homework Read about Rosa Parks

We’ll get started at 1:30.

Our picture for today is from Yoho National Park, BC. It is a ten-hour drive from Vancouver.

Format (layout, how it looks on the page) of a paragraph:
1. Doublespace.
2. Indent the first word of the first sentence in the paragraph. Use the TAB button.
3. The sentence should follow one another so that the paragraph looks like a block of writing.

Structure of a paragraph- what goes into a paragraph

Topic sentence – addresses the question, usually the first sentence
QUESTION: “Why did Maylin argue with the governor?”
TOPIC SENTENCE SHOULD ADDRESS THAT QUESTION.
Maylin argued with the governor because she knew that he would not be able to cook the dish the same as she could.

PLOT SUMMARY
Maylin cooked in the restaurant every day. Her father did not give her any credit. OFF-TOPIC

0/6, 1/6

It will not be successful.

Some students told me a history of China.

FOCUS ON THE QUESTION.

In some ways, your answer can be very simple and clear.

Topic sentence
4-5 supporting sentences, that support the Topic Sentence
1. Maylin was confident
2. ML knew that the governor did not cooking skills
3. ML wanted to teach the governor that they were from different cultures
4. ML wanted to teach the governor that she was an individual

Concluding sentence

ROUGH DRAFT of a paragraph

Maylin argued with the governor because of four reasons. First, she was not afraid of the governor because she knew that she had her own right to express herself in Canada, unlike in the governor’s country where she would have been forced to remain silent. Secondly, she suspected that the governor would not have the cooking skills necessary to create such a sophisticated dish as “Roses Sing on New Snow”. Thirdly, Maylin wanted to teach the governor that they were from different cultures now, and that the culture of her new country, “the New World”, was different from the culture that he came from. Finally, perhaps Maylin wanted to demonstrate to the governor that she was an individual just like him even though she was a woman. She wanted to show him that he would have to show respect to her just like she would show respect to him. All in all, Maylin took a chance when she argued with the governor, but she did so because of her beliefs and principles.

6/6
Great job! Ready for UBC.

did so = did that action
She yelled at her son, but she did so because he was doing something danger.
She yelled at her son, but she yelled at him because he was doing something danger.

I know it’s not easy, but we are going to keep practicing and learning how to do this even better than we are doing it now.
You can do it! You can create top-quality work.

Tomorrow we will continue with paragraph writing. We will go deeper into idea and function of Topic Sentences.
