Business letters - not personal letters

Personal letter - writing to family, friends
casual, not serious, relaxed, friendly

Personal letters have been replaced texting, calling, internet, social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp)

Business letters - writing to a business, boss, supervisor, manager, company, doctor, teacher,
lawyer
- City Hall (municipal government) - house taxes, parking tickets, community centre, garbage and recyling, public tranportation

- provincial government - hospital, education, 

- federal government - immigration, income tax, child benefit, old-age pension, foreign office

Business letters are formal, in a standard format, serious, focussed

Do you get business letters through the mail?
- tax letter, immigration, company (Starbucks), bank, credit card, bills, charities (donations), car life house insurance, service companies (furnace, garage), schools, college, university, job interview rejection letters

Business letter need extra attention.

Write a business letter on computer (word processor) or typewriter.

Always proofread very carefully.

* Address the letter to a specific person. Find out the name of the person.

If you can't find the name use:
Dear Sir or Madam:
To whom it may concern:
* Get to the point immediately.
* The tone (voice, sound) of the letter is formal and polite.
* Make a specific request of what you want them to do.
* Last paragraph- thank them.
