“Why Do We Yawn”

Read it over for a few minutes.

Read aloud.

Discuss vocabulary.

 

yawn – rhymes with ‘dawn’ ‘con’

 

black bears   brown bears   grizzly bear   polar bear

camel- A camel has one or two humps. A camel lives in the desert.

 

desert- a dry place with sand and no water

dessert- sweet thing to eat after you eat dinner e.g. ice cream, pie, cookie, cheesecake, apple, cake

 

mammal- a kind of animal, has hair, is warm-blooded, has live babies

We are mammals. Camels, dogs, cats, horses, whales, tigers and lions are also mammals.

Fish and reptiles are cold-blooded.

 

 

slowly(adverb) – modifies a verb

She talks slowly. He drives slowly.

Often adverbs end in ‘ly’

badly

 

Mei speaks English very well.

I speak French very poorly/badly.

The kids are playing quietly.

You quickly close your mouth.

You close your mouth quickly.

 

I walked away from the argument.

She walked toward the coffee shop.

 

contagious(adjective)-  something that spreads

Covid19 is contagious. The flu is contagious.

Laughing is contagious.

Covid19 is catching/spreading quickly in Vancouver.

 

You yawn, too.  You yawn, also.

She likes dogs. I like dogs, too.

She lives in Vancouver. I live in Vancouver, too/also.

I miss you. I miss you, too.

 

Adjectives- different forms of adjectives

*bored/boring

bored- your feeling, your emotion

boring – desribes what you are looking at, seeing

I feel bored. I am bored.

The movie is boring. The class is boring.

 

*tired/tiring

I feel tired. My job is tiring.

Taking care of little kids is very tiring. The parents are tired.

 

*interested/interesting

Mei is interested in chemistry.

Chemistry is interesting to her.

I am interested in singing and dancing.

Singing and dancing are interesting to me.

English class interesting me. XXX  SV

English class is interesting to me.

*excited/exciting

Mohammed is very excited by cricket.

Cricket is very exciting to him.

 

HIGHER LEVEL For me, I am very interested in where my grandchilden are now.

EASIER LEVEL I am very interested in my grandchilden.

 

 

nervous(adjective)- sort of scared, anxious, worried

symptoms of being nervous- higher voice, upset stomach, stomach ache, sweaty palms, shaky hands, eyes twitch

 

alert(adjective) very awake and aware of your surroundings

Butter is always alert at night time.

She was very alert during the chemistry class.

I was very alert in my job all day in my home country.

I am alert in a strange place.

I am alert when I drive in the dark or the rain.

When I yawn, I stretch.

He stretches when he wakes up.

I stretch my neck and back every day.

You must stretch after a run.

Yoga will help you stretch.

 

Scientists don’t spend much time studying yawning.

I don’t spend much time watching TV.

Mei spends a lot of time talking with her friends.

You spend a lot of time looking at your phone.

He spends a lot of time waiting for the bus/his wife.

Waiting for somebody is boring. I don’t like to spend my time waiting.

Small group chatting:

Get into groups of 4-5. Casual talking in English.

Topic:          What do you when you feel tired?

                     What do you do to wake yourself up?

                     What can you do to increase your energy?
