Good morning, everyone.
I will be teaching EF6/7 in the summer, P1 (8:30-12)
You are welcome to retake this course in the summer.
The summer course will be a close repeat of this course. I change
my courses a little bit every term.
The grammar, sentence and writing work will be the same.
The stories and poems will be different.
If that repetition appeals to you, then great!
If you want new and exciting forays into English, then there are
other options.
IMO- Repetition is the key to permanance in memory or in skills.

Interim- midterm,
halfway point in the term
The midterm
recommendaion is a snapshot of how you are doing at the moment.
Registration for summer
courses (Dates for summer: July 4- Aug 4) will begin tomorrow, May 24th. You will
be able register via the South Hill website as usual.
*You will be emailed
a link soon.*?
In order to
register, you need a recommendation from your teacher, me. Today, I will give you
an interim recommendation for which English class you should register for in the
summer. If you are not going to take a class in the summer, then you don’t need
a rec from me.
We will have a short
chat in the hallway. We will talk about how thigns are going and what your next
course should/could be. I will put your recommendation into a spreadsheet for
the advisors.
The interim recommendation
will be based on the quizzes and tests you have done so far this term. Also, I will
give you a spoken mark out of 10 based on how much speaking you do in class.
Plus there are a few points for submitting HW.
REMINDER:
Tests are worth double
what quizzes are worth.
OPTIONS- Stay or
move up
Lit10/Comp10/EF7
level- stay at 7/10 or go up to 11
11- stay at 11 or
go up to 12
In the summer, do
you want to go to the higher level? Summer school is short.
Some students
think of summer school as extra practice. They will try the harder course
starting in September.
You can decide
for yourself what would be best.
MIdterm recs
The South Hill
English department strongly recommends that students who are marginally
passing (50-60%) not advance to the next level.
Therefore, the
minimum average required to receive a recommendation for early registration for
the next level is 60%. This is to allow stronger students first shot at
registering. This is also to dissuade students who are not ready from
registering in a class that may be too high for them.
We want the
strongest students to have an opportunity to register first.
If you’re below
60%, you will have wait a while to register for the next course.
NOTE: 60% is the
reasonable cutoff point for early registraton starting tomorrow.
However, the
final passmark for courses in BC is 50%. That is your final mark on the last
day.
You can move up
to the next level with 50% at the end of the course, but I don’t think that is
strong enough. You have to get better at your English.
IMPORTANT: The minimum
average for a recommendation to register early for the next level is 60%.
The final passmark is 50%.
We have four
weeks left in our course. You can change your mark significantly depending on
the quizzes and tests yet to come. We have about 3 quizzes and 3-4 tests, presentation(s)
yet to come this term. Also, we will likely have essay(s). Plus the in-class
spoken mark and the HW pts.
You can bring
your mark up.
Also, you can
bring your mark down.
This is the
halfway point.
REMINDER: You
will have an opportunity to replace one of your quiz marks in the final week of
the course. You will have an opportunity to replace one of your test marks in the
final week of the course.
SCENARIO #1
69%
OK for the next level
SCENARIO #2
56%
This is good level to work at, stay
SCENARIO #3
37%
Suggests some challenges that must be overcome.
You can figure out roughly your own average right now, except for
spoken. Add up your
quizzes and tests. Guess at your spoken mark.
We will talk today. We will have one-on-one meetings.
