You read the document over the weekend.

 

BIG QUESTIONS to think about while I teach and explain

1.    Which criteria seem most important to you? Which ones resonate with you? Which ones stand out to you as being relevant to your life?

 

resonate- vibrate, shake, has deep meaning

relevant- related, connected to

 

2.    Which of the criteria do you feel you already do well? Which ones are already your strengths. Which one are you already good at?

 

3.    Which of the criteria do you feel you have/want to improve upon? Which ones reveal some weakness that could strenghtened? Which ones do feel would  be worthwhile working on?

 

 

Let’s go over these- read them, talk about vocab, meaning

 

ambiguous- unclear, not black or white

good at speaking-

good at listening- easier, listening to radio

 

weakness – spelling app “Duolingo” language-learning app, game format, fun

 

spelling in English- challenge- mix of many languages- ancient Latin and Greek, German, French, Anglo-Saxon

PLUS many historical attempts to fix English spelling

e.g. q- French “qu”

one-syllable words- Germanic – concrete word, things

three or more syllables- Latin and Greek- abstract ideas

 

80% of the group - speaking and listening- everyday usage

20% of the group- good thinking

40% of the group- feel their speaking is weak

20% of the group – feel their thinking is weak

 

It’s a big world. Don’t hide under the bed.

Be braver than you feel.

good speaker- body language- hand movement, eye contact,

-         voice- tone, speed (pace), volume, emphasis

emphasis- English is a stressed language. Avoid speaking in a monotone.

monotone- flat voice, no emotion, no up and down

CBC radio (690am) announcers- excellent speakers, great to copy

-very expressive, engaging,

-non-commercial radio

commercial radio – high-energy radio, not a great model for us

 

PROBLEM listening to radio – passive, not active

passive- you are doing anything, not producing anything

active – you have to struggling to produce language

 

most important – self-disciplined, self-directed...

self management- set goals, work to achieve the goals
