HOMEWORK “At the Beach”
REVIEW “The Bare Bones of a Five-Paragraph Academic Essay”
Five-paragraph essay – most basic form, 3X5 essay, academic
essay, go-to model for essays, IKEA essay
PARAGRAPH begin
with a grabber (optional)
topic sentence
ESSAY Introductory paragraph – expands on the
paragraph,
-
expands the grabber and TS into s short
paragraph
-
Thesis statement, thesis (idea)
3 Body paragraphs - supporting points, each one will get a
short
paragraph
Concluding
paragraph-
It is not necessary to write a concluding sentence for each
body paragraph. You are already stating the points in the Introductory
paragraph, the Body paragraphs, and the Concluding paragraph.
Essay writing is a balance of giving information and
repeating information.
*Essay is all about giving and restating information*
What we wind up with is a five-paragraph essay.
REASSURANCE: Writing an essay can feel daunting. Rest
assured, with practice, writing an essay will become routine. After you’ve
written 10 essays, you will be able to do it in your sleep.
A teacher will give reasonable topics in class.
“Explain how modern nuclear power plants are safer than
those built a generation ago.” Unreasonable topic
“Why did you choose to live in Vancouver?” Reasonable topic.
EF6 level
“Compare or contrast Mr Wei and Mr Obi as role models for
their students.”
“Explain why the US went off the Gold Standard in 1971.”
Unreasonable topic
“How to Be a Good Friend.” Reasonable topic EF45
As you move to higher coursework, more specified levels of
education, your essay topics will become more specialized.
CHALLENGE IN ESSAY WRITING: Vocabulary, depth of vocabulary
Build vocabulary! It is good to have five or six synonyms
for common words.
Why did you come to Vancouver?
come- move, immigrate, relocate, live, stay, settle, put
down roots, etc
PREWRITING - brainstorming
YOUR BEST FRIEND https://www.thesaurus.com/
TEACH “The Benefits of Cycling”
How does it look on the page?
-five paragraphs
-paragraphs balanced in length
-introductory and concluding paragraphs are a bit shorter,
OK
Read through, see structure and content
Different modes of writing, writing for different purposes,
different intentions
“The Benefits of Cycling”- PERSUASIVE MODE
“How to Pass a Course at the Top of the Class”- EXPOSITORY,
PROCESS MODE (teach)
DESCRIPTIVE MODE
NARRATIVE MODE
I am teaching the most basic kind of essay.
It is basic but really effective.
This is like following a recipe.
When you get comfortable writing essays after 3-4. 6-7
tries, then you can get more creative and follow your own style. You can choose
the format that will work best for your subject matter.
The style that I am teaching is very basic and clear. It is
simple and ‘easy’ to do. You can get fancier with your essays later.
There are lots of different kinds of essays.
I think about writing like cooking. A beginner writer has to
follow a recipe very closely. When you get some experience cooking, you don’t
need the recipe book anymore.
Plan first!
Then write.
You have to make a plan before you write.
An essay has to be organized.
If the essay is disorganized, I’m not going to take time to
figure it out.
PROCESS- even more inportant for an essay than for a paragraph
PREWRITING (5m, 10m)– planning your essay, making a little
plan to organize what you want to say in each paragraph in your essay
1.Read and understand the question.
2.Brainstorm ideas and vocab
3.Organize, outline
WRITING- (45m-1hr) actually writing the sentences and
paragraphs
4.Write the sentences and paragraphs.
5.Proofread and edit.
6.Submit legible rough copy
Essay work-
Five-paragraph essays
essays “multi-paragraphs”
“in a multi-paragraph essay” “in

five-paragraph essay- mother of all essays, IKEA essay form
foundation of essay writing- you can learn different essay
forms later, next week – compare and contrast essay
Essay writing- lots of good guide books for essay writing
