Sentence combining – very effectice, very useful for improving sentence writing skills

 

beginner level – university level

 

 

Example:

We were riding bicycles. KERNEL – centre, basis of our final sentence

Look for new information:

We rode on the Seawall.

 

JOIN THE ELEMENTS TOGETHER

We were riding bicycles

on the Seawall

 

Decide: simple, compound, complex

Gut reaction, feeling for it

 

SIMPLE We were riding bicycles on the Seawall.

 

We were riding bicycles which we rode on the Seawall.

grammatically – fine

style- unnecessary repetition, poor sentence

overwritten

We were riding bicycles, and we rode on the Seawall. COMPOUND

repetition

overwritten for such a simple idea

 

 

Judgement call – What is the easiest, simplest way to express the ideas?

SIMPLE

COMPLEX

She read a story that was funny in a newspaper.
