We will get started at 8:30.
Teacher: Al Haley
I teach English at South Hill Education Centre. I teach all levels from English Foundations 2- English 12.
I will mute everyone’s microphone. Feel free to unmute your mic and speak whenever you want.
Also, you can write in the Chat box.
Everything that I write on this screen, I will put on the blog at the end of class.
haleyshec.blogspot.com
Feel free to use the blog as much as you like, when you like.
This class was originally supposed to be a EF (English Foundations) 5/6 split. It has
been changed to an EF 6. The EF 5 is being taught by a different
teacher.
Because of Covid19, we are unable to meet in our school. We have to meet online. It’s different, but it is the best that we can do. It has pros and cons.
pros- good things, learn at home, relaxed
cons- bad things, miss the social aspect, harder to feel like a group
Hopefully, you will enjoy the class and learn a lot.
We will meet together, Monday to Friday, using Zoom.
Every day I will post on my blog a link to our Zoom meeting.
For my April-June classes, we met M-F for one hour on Zoom.
Our class is scheduled to run from 8:30-12, but that is too long for a Zoom class.
I will teach from 8:30-9:30. Then we will take a 10-minute break. Then I will teach for another 45 minutes of so. We should be finished each day around 10:30.
Are you an artist?
I will give you some homework to do every class.
It will a little bit, not too much. I know that people are busy with jobs, family, kids, pets, grandparents, chores, and housework.
If you miss a class, that will be a problem for you because you will miss a lot of material. You can read and review what we talked about in our daily online class on my class blog: haleyshec.blogspot.com
To be honest, if you miss a lot of classes, you won’t be able to pass.
We will do all our quizzes and tests using email. My email is ahaley@vsb.bc.ca
You must submit your quizzes and tests on time. I do not like late quizzes and tests.
For example “Email the paragraph to me by 2:30.”
That means 2:30 is the deadline, the time limit.
A couple minutes late is OK, I guess. Anything more than a couple minutes late is a problem.
If there is some reason why you have to pass in your work late, let me know.
When you send me an email please include the following in the Subject heading:
1. Your name, Your class
e.g. Joe Shmoe, EF6
2. The quiz or test or HW
e.g Test#1, Quiz#2
Please write your quizzes and tests in a word processing program. For this class, Microsoft Word would be best if you have it. Microsoft Word is a very popular piece of software. It is part of Microsoft Office. If you are using Windows on your computer, you can use WordPad. If you are using a Mac computer, you can use TextEdit.
These programs are free and come with your operating system. You do not have to buy them.
Attach your quiz or test to the email. Please send quizzes and tests as an attachment to your email.
We will practice this later.
When you send me a quiz or test as an attachment, I will read and make comments on it. Then I will send it back to you. You will be able to read the comments.
We will practice this later.
If you include the test or quiz in the body of the email, I will not be able to give much feedback. I won’t be able to comment or correct grammar and sentences. I will read it and put a mark on it.
If you write with a pen and take a picture, I will not be able to give much feedback. I won’t be able to comment or correct grammar and sentences. I will read it and put a mark on it.
Today, we will try it. I will ask you to do some short writing and sent it to me.
Required Text(s) and workbook(s): everything will be online via
email and via our BLOG
haleyshec.blogspot.com
You can leave comments on the BLOG if you wish.
If you are not getting my emails, please let me know.
If you are on the waiting list, I have not sent you any emails yet because I don’t have your email yet. It may take a day or two to sort out who is in the class.
Right now, I have 30 people registered in the class. There are many people on the Wait List. I don’t have the Wait List yet. The school should send it to me soon.
Let’s do attendance.
Those are the students who are registered.
There are also students who are on the Wait List. I don’t know how many empty I have yet. I will figure that out today.
If you aee on the Wait List and are here in class today, please email me your name ASAP. ahaley@vsb.bc.ca
ASAP – as soon as possible, now
Course Name ENGLISH FOUNDATIONS 6
Theme: Relationships
Num. of Course Hours Approx. 80 hours
Dates July 2 – Aug 5 (five weeks)
Required Text(s) and workbook(s): online, blog, email, provided by instructor
Standard Course Description:
This course will help you improve your reading, writing, and spesking skills in preparation for EF6 and English 10.
Writing is the main focus of this course. It is most efficient to teach writing online.
I find chats, talking, conversation to be challenging on Zoom. We will try. It’s not as easy and natural as it is in the classroom.
I think we miss the facial interaction, body language, emotion of talking to another person when we are online.
You will read literature and nonfiction.
We will learn how to build paragraphs to write about them. Also, you will learn to build academic essays. We will focus on five-paragraph essays, which are the most common basic essays.
Learning Outcomes:
It is expected that students will be able to
• make oral presentations and work effectively in groups
• listen to and understand ideas and information (summarize main ideas and details, distinguish between fact and opinion, make inferences)
This is a big challenge for online students. Listening to a teacher and understanding what is going on is tough, especially for people who are not that comfortable with English.
Am I talking too quickly for you? I feel like I am talking a bit more slowly than usual.
• read a variety of literary prose forms and narrative and lyric poems
I like poetry, and I like to teach poetry. I hope we can get to some in this class.
BREAK – 10m Back at 9:45
• read and comprehend informational and persuasive texts
• use reading strategies
Focus of this class will be sentence writing:
• write simple compound and complex sentences
We will be going into great detail about sentences:
simple
compound
complex
• write a variety of informational writing with an introduction, details, and a conclusion (i.e. introduction to writing essays)
• write a variety of personal, narrative, and creative writings
• write using effective paragraphing
• use appropriate verb tenses and forms
• use a writing process
Major Content Areas:
Sentence, paragraph and essay writing
Short stories
Non-fiction
Poetry
Novel
Assessment (Evaluation/Marking):
ASSIGNMENTS Points
Approx 5-6 quizzes Around 30%
Approx 6-7 tests (paragraph) Around 50%
A few multi-paragraph writing, essay Around 20%
Total Average of all
The instructor may adjust the number and value of assessments according to the needs of the class.
Expectations and Classroom Policies:
Write all tests, homework and assignments using Word or another word processing program.
You may not use dictionaries during work for marks.
I would like to see your English so that I can help you make it better.
Attendance and Participation:
Consistent attendance and positive participation in class are important factors in student success. At South Hill Education Centre, we require that all students demonstrate their commitment to their studies by attending regularly and by participating in class activities
I hope that you will be able to attend our classes. If you are busy and you miss the class, you can check the notes on the blog. If you miss more than a few classes, you probably will be unable to pass.
Late/Missed Assignments:
You can arrange with me to make up the occasional missed test or quiz in the next couple of days after you get back. Let me know and we will figure out a time to do the makeup. I won’t go back and allow people to makeup tests from more than a few days.
For example, last term a student missed a test in the second week. They waited until the fifth week to ask to do a makeup. I wouldn’t allow it. It was too far back
A couple of days is ok. Anything longer than that is too late.
* Very important
Academic Honesty:
Academic honesty is expected of all students. Cheating (including plagiarism) is a serious offence with immediate consequences. For more information, please refer to the “Academic Honesty Policy” posted in each classroom or ask for a copy in the office.
Cheating often means plagiarism.
pla·gia·rism (noun) the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.
This usual happens when I student goes online or to a book, copies text, and then submits that text for marks.
For example: What were residential schools?
I expect you to write your own sentences about the topic.
Residential schools were government-sponsored religious schools that were established to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture.
Plagiarized material. You didn’t write that.. These are not your sentences.
That gets a 0. Also, I will write a letter for your VSB file. If you do twice, I won’t want you in my class.
I am here to help. I will help as much as I can. Please, don’t try to trick me with plagiarized text. I don’t like it. I hope you won’t, but it happens.
Solution to this problem: Write your own sentences. Alternatively, learn how to quote material. “” I will teach you how to do this.
Final Word:
Have fun and good luck.
I think we’ll have an enjoying time. We will keep learning English. We’ll make it fun.
HOMEWORK:
Write a personal introduction for yourself. Write a sentence for each.
1) Home
2) Family
3) Occupation
4) Hobbies
5) Travel
6) Special skills
7) Future plans
Write a sentence each for those topics.
Use Word to write those.
Please email them to me by 11am today.
ahaley@vsb.bc.ca
Remember to put your name and EF6 in the SUBJECT line.
