e.g. “She loves her dog because he is very loyal to her.” COMPLEX – adverb clause
“Her dog is loyal to her, so she loves him.” COMPOUND

“I am shivering because it is cold.” CMPLX – adv cl.
“Because it is cold, I am shivering.” CMPLX – adv cl.

“It is cold because I am shivering.” Why is it cold? It is cold because I am shivering. NOT TRUE
“I am shivering because it is cold.” Why am I shivering? I am shivering because it is cold. TRUE

Logic problem

Daily practice – the route to improvement
I play a couple different musical instruments. I practice every day. – I try hard to get in 30 minutes in the morning and one hour at night. Music is important to me. 
I understand the frustration of practicing and working and feeling like you’re not getting better. The solution is to keep going and keep practicing.

Common error with complex sentences – confusing compound and complex
“Because it is cold, so I am shivering.” XXX
confused two sentence styles
“Because it is cold, so I am shivering.”
because – CMPLX adv cl
, so - CMPD
They don’t go together.
“Because It is cold, so I am shivering.” CMPD
“Because it is cold, so I am shivering.” CMPLX

An hour an day – 10 000 days – 27 years
Two hours a day -5000 days - 13.5 yrs

You want to be good, you have to put in the time.

Even if she makes herself ill, she will continue to try to lose weight. It sounds like she has a problem with body image.

Drink some water if you are thirsty.

SAME MEANING – Two styles of sentence
1. You cannot drive unless you get your driver’s license.
2. I couldn’t pass my driving test the first time even though I took some classes before.
3. I am going to work even though it may rain.

even if – maybe, possibility
I am going to work even though it may rain.
I am going to work even if it rains.
I will keep practicing basketball even though I am not very good.



-so that – reason for something
She is saving money so that she can buy a new bicycle.
She is saving money, so she can buy a new bicycle. AWK CMPD
so that – reason that gives an ability, empowerment
She eats well and exercises so that she can have a long healthy life.
She wants to have a long healthy life, so she eats well and exercises.
There is a subtle difference.
1. Johanna works hard so that she can be one of the  department's managers.
2. I practice badminton very hard so that I can win my games. I am a competitive person.
3. I was very tired so that I could not stay up. AWK
I was very tired, so I could not stay up.
I stayed up late so that I could see Santa Claus.
4. I am learning English so that I can to get intuch a  good job.
5. I am going to increase my skills so that I can find better job.

older than, smaller than, more expensive than
I am older than you (are).
You are younger than me (I am). casual talking
You are younger than I. correct grammar, but sounds too fancy. sounds pretentious

Vancouver is more expensive than Portland (is).

 -as…as = comparison, two things the same
as ADJ as
“I am as tall as you are.’ same height
“I am taller than you are.” different heights
