September quarter:
This likely will be my teaching schedule for September.
I will be teaching English 10 level (ELA10/EF7) in Period 2 and Period 3.
Quarter 1 - September Term
Monday – Friday Sept 8 – November 6
Period 2 11:00 am – 1:15 pm English 7 ELA 10
Period 3 1:30 – 3:45 pm English 7 ELA 10
You can choose which period you like if you want to enroll.
This schedule could change depending on the needs of the students and the school.
Nobody knows if we will be back in the classroom or if we will continue with online classes. The school board will let us know later in the summer how September adult education will be structured.
If you would like to take either of these classes, you can register starting July 9th. Email the advisor that you emailed last time you registered.

Sentences: necessary to become very good at writing sentences
Sentence types:
1. Simple
2. Compound
3. Complex
4. Compound-complex
Basic knowledge, basic skills that we have to know very well.
1. Simple sentence – one independent clause,
clause – group of words that has a subject and a verb
Clause – Subject Verb
The dog is asleep. This clause is a simple sentence by itself. It is an independent clause.
independent – does not require help
Because he is tired. This clause is not a sentence by itself. It is a dependent clause
dependent – requires assistance, help
Because he is tired. not a sentence, sentence fragment
The dog is asleep because he is tired. Complex sentence
Some grammar books say “independent clause” or “main clause”.
Some grammar books say “dependent clause” or “subordinate clause”.
Simple sentences – one main clause
variations of simple sentences
SV subject verb “The cat is cute.”
SSV “The cat and the dog are friends.”
“The Chinese government and Hong Kong pro-democratic protesters are at odds with each other.”
SVV “The little girl is singing and (is) dancing.”
“Covid19 affects the entire/whole world but hurts poor people most.”
SSVV “Ice cream and cake taste great but are not good for you.”
“Canada and the United States are neighboring countries but have significant cultural differences.”

like + gerung ‘ing’ looks like a verb, it is a noun

Two other styles of simple sentences:
question
imperative
question- reverse the SV
You are happy.
Are you happy? simple interrogative sentence (questions)
Are you free? SV
What time does the bus come? SV
Do you want to stay in Vancouver or move to Calgary? SVV
imperative – command sentence, tell somebody to do something
“You sit.” “Sit.”
We don’t say the subject- the subject it implied. We mean it, but we don’t say it.
“Come in. Sit down.” “You come in. You sit down.”
“You Be careful.”
“Brush your teeth.”
“Have a cookie.”
“Turn off the light, please.”
“You Wash the dishes or sweep the floor.” SVV
Osoyoos is very warm in the summer.
Okanagan Valley – swimming, wineries, cycling
Mostly Canada is a cold country.
Many of my students who come from hot countries have to adjust to the new climate.

Verb tenses:
We will continue to work through verb tenses over the next few weeks.
There are 12 verb tenses in English.
Some of these verb tenses we use a lot (high frequency); some of them we rarely if ever bother with (low frequency).

Simple present – We use it all the time.
habitual action – things we do usually, normally, every day
“I drink coffee” -doesn’t mean right now, means usually
“I wake up early.” “I usually wake up early, but today I got up late.”
“Sarah does yoga every Tuesday night.” habitual , routine activity
- state of being – the way you are, the way something is, manner, personality
“Jon is an angry person.”
“Jon is a kind person.”
“Saina is funloving person. She laughs a lot.”
“Vancouver is beautiful but expensive.”

simple present – habitual action, state of being, truth, fact

Possible confusion between these two terms:
simple sentence - type of sentence
simple present tense – type of verb tense
They aren’t the same thing. This could be confusing because of the word ‘simple’ being used in both.
