Features of a Good Topic Sentence

- Opens a door for the reader to walk through. An invitation to keep reading.

- Not a general fact.

- Don’t announce the topic.

e.g. “In this paragrpah, I will tell you about Sri Lankan New Year’s.”

ALTERNTIVE ”Sri Lankan New Year’s is a wonderful mix of ceremony, food, and celebration.”

- Specific. Focus the topic down with your controlling idea.

- Deals with one idea
