EF1 2 Class 5 Simple present of 'Be'

 

Good morning, everyone.

 

We will get started at 9:15.

 

Today’s class plan:

·      Overview of verb tenses-

·      Work on verbs- “Simple Present Tense of Be

·      Adjective work

 

 

Overview of verb tenses-

English has verb tenses. I want to teach four or five verb tenses to you over the next few weeks.

 

We will start with these three

 

SIMPLE TENSES

-simple present- happens all the time, usually, every day, regularly

Mei drinks tea. usually, every day- Does not mean right now.

Sarah plays badminton.

Sometimes I go to swimming. less than usually

In the morning, he drinks tea. every morning

Every morning, I wake up at 6 o'clock.

I work every day. I go to work every day. subject verb

I cook every day. I make dinner for my family every evening.

I drive/take my car to school every day.

Shirin goes to mosque every evening.

I walk half an hour every day.

I bring Butter to school every Friday.

Junko goes to the dentist twice a year.

We go camping once a year.

I go back to my home country every year.

We celebrate Christmas/my son’s birthday/Chinese New Year/Hallowe’en/Fit’r once a year.

Everybody goes crazy on Black Friday every year.

I wait for Black Friday every year.

I call my mother three times a week.

I call my mother once every two days.

I go to work every day at 5pm.

Everyday, I call my friends.

I shower every day. I take a shower/bath every day.

I take the bus to work. the bus- city bus

We have to practice speaking English every day.

NEGATIVE VERBS

I do not drive/take my car to school every day.

Mei does not drinks tea. Mei does not drink tea. Mei doesn’t drink tea.

does not- doesn’t  -contraction, shorter  with ‘ apostrophe

Shirin does not go to mosque every evening. doesn’t go

 

 

-simple past- happened once in the past, finished

-yesterday, last night, last week

Last night, I picked up my son at work.

I came to Vancouver six months ago.

-simple future- will happen once in the future, not yet

tonight, tomorrow, next week, next year, in ten years

Tonight, I will play guitar.

Tonight, I will make dumplings for my family. She will boil them. She will fry them. She will steam them.

steam – hot vapour from boiling water

Tonight, I will watch a movie with my husband.

Tonight, I will review my English lessons.

I will take my children to skating tonight.

I will go to my family doctor tomorrow. I will go to see a/my doctor.

Do you have a family doctor? No. Yes.

Tonight, I will make noodles.

Tomorrow, I will go to South Hill for my class.

Next week, I will have/do a driving test.

The day after tomorrow, I will buy a new car.

The leaved change colour in fall.

Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall.   maple tree, oak tree, birch tree

Evergreen trees keep their leaves and needles all year long.   spruce tree, fir tree, pine tree, cedar tree, Xmas trees

 

In the fall when the weather gets colder, the leaves change. They will grow back in the spring.

 

In Vancouver, we will the cherry blossoms in early Spring.

 

Fall and Autumn are the same thing. You can choose which work you like. I use both.

 

I am happy here in Canada.

 

OK- okay  Either way is good.  The movie was OK. The movie was okay.

 

IDIOM get along with- friendly with a person

I get along with my sister.

She doesn’t get along her mother-in-law.

I got along with my mother-in-law.

My mother-in-law is like my mother.

HOMEWORK

Write a simple sentence for each subject verb in Exercise 1.

Try at least five of them. If you have time to do more, great.
