Types of paragraphs: narrative, descriptive, process, persuasive

 

narrative writing – telling a story

narrative paragraph – tells a short personal story (80-100 words)

personal story – a story from your life

 

-In English Foundations 1/2, a paragraph is 80-100 words

- In English Foundations 3/4, a paragraph is about 100-150 words.

- In EF 5/6, a paragraph is about 150-200 words.

 

narrate (v) – to tell a story

narrator (noun) – a person who tells a story

 

narrative writing- often first-person narration “I” “my” “me”

usually a personal story, writing about your life and your experiences

 

POSSIBLE TOPICS:

“What is your dream for your future?”

“What was a scary moment that happened to you?”

“What was a funny moment that happened to you?”

 

“What did you do on your first day in Canada?”

“What did you do last Sunday?” EXAMPLE FROM CLASS

          I really want to be a building engineer. I want to help make houses and buildings for people and cities. A building engineer designs plumbing, electrical, heating, structures, etc. I will work on computer and draw plans. I will talk with customers and builders. I will make good money. I will start my own business and hire many people.  I will be a good boss. I will study two years at BCIT. I have to really study hard to do well in college. I am excited about becoming a building engineer.

salary – money that you earn, pay from a job, paid per biweekly, or monthly

biweekly – every two weeks

 

 

wage- hourly amount of money, paid by the hour

 

Minimum wage in BC is $15.65 per hour.

profession- area or job, white-collar job, requires university

 

-white-collar job- teacher, doctor, office worker

-blue-collar job- skilled trades, plumber, mechanic, electrician, repair, physical work

Canada has very good pay for skilled-trades.

benefits- extras besides money- health insurance, dental, pension, vacation pay

 

pension – money for when you are retired, usually over 65

 

Canada Pension – you pay into that when you are working

OAS – Old Age Security – money for low-income seniors

 

various benefits from the Canadian government – disability allowance, child benefit, free secondary education
